Keeping Bichirs in high tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As long as the width of the tank isn't like 12" than you should be good. Ugh...a 5' tall 1' wide tank would be a huge PITA to clean, lol!

I have a 4 foot deep tank. 1" thick acrylic. I just bought a huge magnet cleaning contraption to get at the algae with out getting wet. $120.00!!!! And I'm happy and wish I bought the damn thing sooner LOL. As far as polys go in a deep tank, I say go for it.

You forgot to mention how you keep the substrate clean

For my show tanks I use canister filters down low and I also use an overflow wet/dry sump system for my main filtration.
The closed loop canister filter has it's intake and return about 1" above the gravel and that stirs up debris. Some of it gets sucked up by the canisters intake and some of it gets pushed to the over flows. This system seems to keep the gravel clean for the most part.
Also for actual cleaning look up "boom stick" this is what I use to actually suck up the gravel and clean it.

5ft deep x? X ?,have fun cleaning that unless its big enough to get in lol.

Yup no problem. But I highly recommand against it.

Both a PITA for you and the bichirs.

You : Cleaning the tank bottom
Bichir : Swimming up for food (unless you are using sinking types) and air [could be a good thing, train their muscles perharps?]

And to add to King's point, yes in the wild some parts are usually more than 5ft deep
but the bulk of the bichirs population hang out near the shallow regions.

:iagree:

If you do choose to go for it, please keep enough floating plants to shelter the bichirs if they choose to hang out close to the surface like the juvies do.

In any case, the tank is going to look magnificent if the length and breadth are also large enough.

Good luck,

Bolding for emphasis.

Yes it will. Currently, though, the tank is just in the planning stages, so I'm still going to build the basic layout.

12x7x7 feet. In the works and currently only in the planning stage. Getting input now to see what I can place in that big construct. Looking more at "Living Room" Monster Fish like Silver/Black Arowanas and Polypterus and not any of the true monsters like Gator Gar or Arapaima.

Why not? If I had such a large tank, I'll go arapaima!

Looking forward to this build thread!
