Keeping Channa Micropeltes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have had micropeltes for 7 years now,They will and indeed do kill everything in the tank once the outgrow them.Mine lived with an oscar for years i knew he would eventually tear it in half....Seriously take it or leave it micro will kill and eat what ever is in just as soon as it's big enough...Why have an oscar in there in the first place?? It was given to me at 7 inch i didnt want it but took it anyway and the micro grew up with him,but as already said instinct cant be taken away and he was seen as food at 11inch long, the micro was around 14 inch. Now i do believe it is all different as no 2 snakeheads are the same,i suppose if the tank is big enough and the tank mates are larger there may be no problems but at the end of the day micro is a preadator and if he sees it as food he will eat it....

regards

tim

Hi,I have always keep and kept my micros in a species tank for two important reasons, one no tank is big enough for them, two for their predatory nature.

iv seen a video of the micro and silver arowana together

there are loads of videos showing micro with other fish , the point being "long term"

if you could show me a video of a adult (3ft+) micro with any arowana in a private aquarium i would be amazed. to be honest i would be amazed if you showed me a video of a 2ft+ micro living with an arrow

as timske pointed out , it may be possable while the micro is smaller than the other fish and does not see them as food , but long term you dont get many fish that grow larger than a micro and even less people that could house them.

the other problem with pictures and videos (that gives rise to the i seen it in a video or picture type statments) is how do you know that worked long term , chances are the person took the video or picture the first day they got there new micro or new arowana , they often dont post up " look my $2 snakeheads has just killed my $3000 arowana i was warned not to mix and i feel really daft for not listening now"

the only fish that should be in a micro tank long term is more micros , even then not many people can really look after one micro long term. even less a group . and re-holming a large micro is not an easy thing , personally i hope to see the day when diplogramma is farmed to bring the prices down , as then we can all get micros that grow to a good size and can be mixed to a degree

cheers col
