My IT is always stable with drift wood in his tank. When I had just substrate in the tank, he was always black and hid in the top corner.

I tried keeping my IT dats without any driftwood for a few days, but they just hid in the corner of the tank and turned even blacker. I'm thinking about trying it again for a longer time though.

Asm, patience is they key with tigers, especially small ones. Small ones love to hide.
You wait till they 10-12 inch. No need to hide any more, always swimming around looking at you as if to say. "u gonna feed me or what?"
I hardly watched my tigers when they were little, but once 8 inch plus, I spent alot more time watching them, as they hid less ad displayed alot more.

Wow, that's great info. I thought that dats in the wild always hide, no matter how big they are, because they're ambush predators. But it's great to know that once they get big enough and feel safe, they'll come out more. I think I'll just keep the dw in for now then while they're small.

i have had very small tigers that didn't need to hide if you have hiding places they will use them its as simple as that

i also have found that tigers don't like bare bottom tanks that much i always have a bare bit of glass were the rays push the sand back small tigers mainly NTT seam to go down very low over the bare bit even dragging their nose some times

all tigers like to interact with the owners if you give them hiding places they will just keep 1 eye on you grab food then return to the hiding place

without the hiding places you will find they will come to the front of the tank looking for food as soon as you enter the room

I'm not saying this will happen the 1st day you take the wood out but it will happen you wouldn't expect a new puppy to come to you when you call they take time to get used to the new owner

Can take many many many months, for them to get used to no hiding spaces. For months they will still use the filter pipes to hide, when small.

I can honestly say, I have noticed no behavoural differences with my tigers... 3.5 years with sand, 1.5 years BB. I use to worry about light reflecting up but by bulb is so dim, I don't think it matters. (3ft flouresc. Tube 30 w)

With my IT (7-8") he is too big to hide in my driftwood. He used to be stable 24/7, but then I sold him, then regretted it, and bought him back, lol. Now he is mostly unstable, but hopefully he will stable up soon!
