Here's some pictures that I took of the gar a few days ago.

assuming the depth in the dorsal view shot isn't playing a huge factor, that small gar is definitely in danger of being eaten by the larger gar. at those early stages gars are highly prone toward cannibalism--

wiggles, were did u get these exactly?? i want to catch my next gar myself

I caught them in the Allegheny River between Lock & Dam 5 and Lock & Dam 6. That section of river is near Freeport, PA.

The arrow and yellow dot indicate the exact location where I caught the gar. I'm pretty sure that there are more in the cove directly across the river from where I caught mine, but I have yet to explore it this year.

My friend's dad caught a decent sized longnose gar on the other side of the one lock & dam (can't remember which off the top of my head).

My three gar are longnose gar right? Would better pictures help?

yup, they are longnose gars. that's also the only species found in that area (PA has a very small population of spotted gars off Lake Erie, but they are also protected) --

The gar are now 6", 5.5", and 2.5" long. The two largest gar are eating quite a bit now (4-8 rosy reds nightly between the two); the smallest is living (and eating) happily in an all-you-can-eat buffet of feeder guppies.

The 5.5" gar jumped out as I was putting feeders in tonight, but I quickly scooped it up and placed it back in the tank. It was out of the tank for maybe all of 30 seconds. It was a bit dazed when I placed it in the tank, but it took off after I moved back and forth for a few seconds in the tank.

Well, the two biggest gar seem to be growing at an extremely fast rate. The largest gar is 8" long, and the next largest gar is about 6.5" long. I now go through about a dozen rosy reds each night. I'm greatly surprised by this rapid growth rate; is this normal?

The smallest gar is about 3" long despite having access to feeder guppies at all times. It will remain separate from the other two gar in order to prevent it from getting devoured.
