a mountain ..far far away
im interested in keeping a large mouth ...have afew questions ..can i keep him with any other tropical fish ..like say..an Oscar jack dempsey ect.. or would he need different tank conditions ....? ... i would like to grow him pretty large ...can you find Florida strain large mouths readily and if so where? .. i live in northern va. and im not sure of my options

well as for the tropical fish question no bass need different conditions most likely colder waters and well with jack demseys and oscars full size compared to the basses the bass would eventually eat them or the exact opposite depending on size i once seen a lmb about a foot long put in two a tank of two jack dempseys of the same size the male was actually larger long story short in the morning the jack dempseyes were dead youd also need a large tank for a lmb and a even larger for a florida strain dont know were to get those though as for a reg lmb got a pole? ive caught some pretty big bass in VA

yea ..the more i read on this site the more i learn..and from what i have read on here so far ...im prolly better off digging a pond in the back yard if i want serious size for a LMB....maybe ill pass on tanking one right now ...but "BUCKET MOUTHS" are still my favorite :)

alot depends on the size of the bass that you get, all bass get big and the fla bass gets to be one of the biggest, so keeping small or medium chiclids will be out of the question and keeping them in a tank of at least 150gl to start of with and then placing the bass into a much larger tank or indoor/outdoor pond, how many you will have will have an effect on it also, you can look at the for sale or wanted on this forum and there are other forums to look at you just have to look around and by the way welcome to MFK

when i was younger i caught a 4-6" lmb behind my parents house and to be funny i threw it im my moms tank with all her lil colorful fish and he ate all of them in a matter of 2 hours . i thought it was funny , her ...... not so much .

florida bass are bigger then northern bass becuase they dont really hibernate and have more time to eat and put on weight than other bass, id say you should be good witha few bass ina 150 for around a year but you cant release them if they out grow

no you could get a 19" bass in a 125, the tank is only 18"wide, both bass can reach the same size but the florida strain grows faster

a 19in bass could fit in a 125 but it would not be conftorable. they can be kept and thrive with tropical fish. and i keep mine with a SB oscar with no problems. make sure you keep them well fed and few fish will ever dissapear. its a good idea if you want a community that you have at least one fish that you dont care if it ends up as a feeder and make sure its the smallest in the tank. if you get a female they have a much worse temperment then males and will often times not allow any other fish in their tank. your going to want to start with a fingerling if you can. in spring they can be easily caught with bobber and worms. bigger ones will stress alot more being taken from the wild and are alot harder to get onto prepared foods. oscar makes great tank mate with them. i havent tried a jack dempsey with them but arowana and bowfin do great with them.
