Dont really know if anyone can help but i keep reading about all the native american setups and i need one of my own.

Now im not after american fish i want a uk native setup.

I dont really know what the law is on this type of setup or removing fish from rivers or lakes whatever so any information would be really helpful.

provisionally i am after freshwater but if that is not possible what about marine? (there is plenty of nice looking wrasse being caught within a mile of where im sitting at the moment).

so any ideas would be great

Unless you have a chiller, I wouldn't mess with UK marine fish. Don't know the laws for the UK, over here nongame fish are, for the most part (unles endangered or threatened), fair game. Game fish usually must be taken by hook and line and have size and bag limits. I don't know much about FW fish in the UK, but assume they are coldwater for the most part. You may have some fish that do ok in the temperate range, though. As far as laws go, check with whoever is in charge of licensing hunting and fish. Maybe just call the queen up on her private line...

Otherwise, just get out there and see what you can catch. If you don't know what it is, get a picture and and a field guide, or check fishbase. I know there are some native Cyprinids, but that's all I know for sure. Once you get your tank goin, post some pics. I'm curious to see what you have over there.

I do not know your laws but there are several species there that can be kept without chillers, such as the phoxinus minnows.

thankd for the input everyone.

yeh im pretty sure i would need a chiller but would that be a problem are they really expensive to run or something?

for some reason i have something in my mind that it is illegal to remove fish from rivers as all waterways are ultimately owned by the Queen so that might be a problem. However i have also seen crucian carp, rudd, roach and others for sale on the net.

yeh i would love to get a perch in a tank to watch them.

if not im pretty sure that if its in the ocean its fair game so maybe i will have to go that route. Maybe a few of these?

Just call the queen up and say "Since you don't seem to be using those minnows, do you think I could have a couple?" I know it's a cultural thing, but it just seems funny to me that in the 21st century, the queen still owns the water and everything in them.

I would say the queen's more of a tourist attraction than anything else these days. Mainly used as a binding symbol for Britons, it wasn't until the mid/late 19thC that the monarchy became popular, mainly as a sign of imperialism and to celebrate britishness.

I'm sure she wouldn't mind it if we took some minnows, but swans and sturgeon.....thats another matter :P

i wouldnt exactly say the monarchy is popular now, more tolerated i think.

Anyway i am still trying to find info on wether or not fish like perch would need a chiller or i could just get a away without.

I understand a need for constant temps but wouldnt it be enough if its in my house or do i need to bring the temp down?
These are all things in looking into.

Anyway nthe search for truth goes on!!! :)

Chillers are quite expensive, $300+ US but a small airconditioner can be used to make one much cheaper.
