Keeping sand and tank clean?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
feed less, thin your stock, get some geos, put a powerhead just above the sand to keep it from settling... lots of things you can do.

What's a Geo ?.Is it a gymnogeophaus ?.I had two but one died.

my Geos (tapajos redheads & heckelii) only pick crap up & spit it out. and crap like everything else.
:-/ no effect on cleanliness, unless some crumbling of the crap matters.

I've been thinking where I could put my powerheads because the two hob filters are on each corner of the back of the tank and 90 % + of crap is in the front.I do water changes and sand cleaning at the same time but with the waste being bad it has to be done at least once a day. It's alot of work to do on the big one having to grab the hose, drag it across the house, get small step ladder or stool, use vac, climb down, move step ladder, repeat, then I hate rolling up the hose it always twist and kinks, besides this was a good thing because now I know there's a problem with filtration and circulation.I don't mind cleaning the tanks it's all apart of fish health and care.I just think there's no need to have to do it everyday.I want to be able to enjoy them.Maybe with the xp 4 things will get better.

I really envy all the guys for their DIY skills, and just easily understanding the equipment.
Maybe that's why more men are into big tanks than women?
Females usually stick with little setups, and as soon as I went to needing bigger filtration, it felt just like looking under the hood of my truck.
:-(
Where's a mechanic?!! Call the plumber.

Geophagus tapajos stay smaller than some of the others. They do break up the crap and help move it around where some makes it to the filter. Still need to vacuum but I can go a week between.

Thats why I hate sand and got rid of it. I have nice river rock (gravel) that looks good and I vacum once a week lightly when I do my watwerchange. Watch the sand so it doesn't clog your hob filters, I had an aquaclear ruined by sand in the impellars.

I got a couple wave makers and they seem to really help with the same problem, a few of the smaller fish don't seem to fond of them so i switch turning them on and it seems to keep everything moving enough that theres not a bunch of crap laying on the bottom of the tank.
Some of the large fish lovem

Filtration isn't the issue. I use 2 big canisters and 2 wave makers on my 125 and I still have to vacuum daily. I only have 4 very small fish so overstocking isn't the problem. I plan on getting another filter with a UV as well as 2 more wave makers to help out a bit more. I use the Eheim Quick Vac Pro and I think it's very effective as long as you don't just shove it into the sand. Let it hover just above and all the poop will get sucked up. At least the sand forces you to keep the tank clean. :)

The eheim battery powered gravel vac Is an Awsome tool.
What you need is to get an eheim 2252 internal. It's the best and most powerful internal filter 1200 L turnover. It will polish your water amazingly.
Get rid of all plecs . They just produce too much waste
Geo's are good at disturbing waste so the internal can clean up.
The best cleaners are twin bar TF. They actually eat poo. Yes, you heard correct.
I have 3 stingrays and 10 tiger fish. And since I added the TF and internal eheims , I never need to gravel vac ... Ever.

Thanks everyone for the advice and opinions. The poweheads aren't working because the fish keep digging pits and building mounds around them but that's what they do.I'm just going to keep trying and see what works and I hope physically things get better for me or one of the ideas work or I'll just have to give up the hobby hopefully not forever.

The waste problem will just get worse as the fish get bigger...
Eheim 2252 . Zooplus sell for £67 which is great value.
Should solve all the issues. And no need for the power heads either as the internal is so powerful .
Good luck
