Keeping sting Rays without water change ~!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been running a drip system for around 8 months now on a 450 gal with 150 gal sump changing out around 80 gal a day. 2 fluval fx5's and a pump turning over 1200gal/hr going through 2- 7"x32" 50 micron filter socks. Left on holidays for 3 weeks without any tank cleaning during this time and returned to good water parameters.( 0.1 mg/l nitrite , 20 mg/l nitrate , 0 ammonia ) . my fluval fx5's are all bio media. Fish were always fed twice daily during this time. 1x12",3x9",1x7" motoros.

Maybe you can use a combo of zeoliet and nitrate reduct media. This will lower your nh4, no2 and no3 to zero for a good month before you need to wash it out. might help to keep water good if you cant find somebody to help you out.

are sump and drip system two seperate system ??
I am not too familiar w/ the drip system...
my understanding is... if keep driping the water in ( = constantly water change) .... u probably dont need a wet/dry no more?

I must do some research on this drip system thinging...
I dont know if i can do dripping when i am not around... because my house will be completely empty and no body around.... ( my overflow caused a big flood once, so i am worried abt building up a drip system... )

anyone can provide me some feedbak and info on this ?

Thank you very much...

I thought abt this... and this is very good idea...

I dont know my friends ( lack of knowledge) can take care them...

but i also worry that... people dont return my fish bak to me...

find someone one here that would be willing, and meet them before hand. may sound crazy, but ask them to see their license, so you can know their adress. this way, in the event, god forbid, you know where to direct the police to.

a small notarized letter saying their caring for your rays, and in the event of any mishaps, you must be contacted and have the fish photographed, as a shipper would do with a DOA. its a slight pain in the butt, but will enable you to safely entrust your rays with someone.

i imagine anyone on here with honest intentions would have no issues with it. i know if i lived within an hour or so of you, id be glad to volunteer.

type a search on drip systems.

drill a bulk head in ur sump at the level u like to keep ur sump at. run pvc to a drain or ur sump pump (hopefully u have one semi close to ur tank)

then run a pipe from ur nearest cold water line and install a water filter, then a ball valve, (to constrict flow) right into the tank.

the water will slowly fill in ur tank and slowly drain out ur sump.

when i had my rays in a 150 i had to do water changes every day. their is no way they would survive

You should look in the yellow pages or ask the guy you bought the rays from, because there are people who go to take care of other peoples fish tanks for a living (usually store owners who do it on their off-time). It might cost you some money (depending on the size of your tank, could be $50-100), but I would think its worth the lifes of your rays. Generally these people know what theyre doing, and would be able to stop by your place and change the water as often as youd like them to. Probably would have to ask a friend to go with them also (thats up to you - I wouldnt want a stranger in my place all by himself), and also would still have to have a friend feed them.

You can also ask people who have fish tanks in their businesses or stores who is taking care of their tanks. There are people who do aquarium maintenance as a business and you can get references that way.

I am not proud of it (actualy discustid) but in the beginging of my ray keepng i did water changes 1 a month not happy about it i did alot of stupid stuff in the early days. The ray did survive though

if you dont have enought time to do 1 water change per week then you dont have enought time to keep any fish IMO

nitrates build up in the tank and the only real way to remove them is buy doing water change unless you have loads of plants in your tank which i dont think you will in a ray tank
