really informative, thanks sandtiger!

i have a question, i have in the past made the mistake of taking a fish home from a pond putting it in with my oscars, and several months later found fluke on my fish that i had to pick off of them daily. i was 14 and didnt listen to my father. is there a way to ensure the fish are safe before putting them into a "prize" tank. i had tried several medications back then ad was unable to ever get rid of them. would like to know because i would love to add a native tank to the house.

Yes you can quarantine your fish in a seperate tank.....what does the "Fluke" look like? Do you have pictures......if its anchorworms products with dimlin work real well.

no i dont have pics and they are long gone now. they were small dark brown wormy looking things that were pointy at both ends and no bigger than 1/4 inch maybe, anchorworm is probably the proper term. after picking them off for so long it did teach the fish to lay down at the top of the water and let me remove them. i used a few types of chemicals with no luck fish lasted maybe 8 months later. gave up for 8 years and finally got the space and time to try it again.

I would recommend using products with Dimlin if you find anchorworms on your quarantined fish. I use to quarantine fish for 2 weeks before introduction into the main tank.

Yes Sandtiger is the one who unknowingly got me into natives.......one thing the article dosent cover is the different subspecies of Sunfish (Longear has the Northern Longear, Central Longear [Missouri], and Bayou Longear (louisiana), Bluegill and Dollar sunfish also have several subspecies.

Something I noticed in the article that I believe is a little off, concerning the minnow traps. Sunfish are considered game fish and the law says that any game fish caught in a trap must be immediately released back into the water. I know this is the law in SC, not sure about other states.

I'm no expert on the laws however. I could be wrong haha.
