I have 2 250 watt heaters in my 125 gallon tank. They're set at ~78 degrees. It usually gets chilly in my room at night. Will the heaters continue to keep the temp consistent or do I have to turn the temp up a little?

Trick is to get the water to temp so the heaters turn just off then pinch em up, I would set the temp 3 degrees or so higher than your goal you should not have to worry about it dropping too low. Do you have a sump? If you do put the heaters in there It will keep it more consistent. I run my water hot at like 85 and I'm working with alot of water, but, I ran 2 rena 300 in my 135 and I had no problems at all. Get a good thermometer and keep checking it. If it dips at night 2 or 3 degrees really won't be too bad because the temp doesn't fluctuate rapidly, it's gradual enough for the fish to deal. Do you have glass tops on that tank? They do a better job insulating and will keep it more consistent as well. Pm for more help if needed.

What kind of fish do you keep that are happy at 85 degrees? I use that temp if im Salt and heat caring for fish...

Your heaters are thermostatically controlled, no need to adjust them.

Get an old comforter and throw it over the tank when you put the fish to bed, that will help insulate the tank....an old wool blanket does the trick too.

Good idea on the blanket. I'm using 2 250 watt Visi-Therm Stealth Heaters. Their currently set at 78 degrees. I had my door open (sliding door) last night and ended up waking myself up getting worried it was too cold for the fish. I do not have a top yet, I really need to get one, quick. Any ideas? It's a 125 gallon with 3 sections. I was planning on doing a fishless cycle so I figure I had a little time to get a top and just wanted to get the tank running. I went into a fish store by me and they strongly recommended using start fish and said they should stay alive without problems as long as I do not over feed them. Granted this is the only private fish store still around and has been around for 20+ plus years. I figured I'd take their advice. They said they could get me any fish I want, which I'm glad so I will not have to order anything.

Anyways back on topic, M.Carfi, I do have sump but the overflow dies after 10 minutes or so, so I do not want to put the heaters in there until it's working properly. I think somethings wrong with the check valve. It seems to suck air in after a little while.

I used to keep my discus @ 84-86 all the time, I keep my current angels at 85 as well. They love it, growing fast and growing big lol.

I was told to keep the tank between 75 and 80. I did have it at 85 but my fish store said that having it that warm kills of oxygen.

I run my loaches a bit warm, too. Make sure you have enough heaters/enough wattage & plenty of circulation. A tight lid will also make a HUGE difference!!!!!
