Keeping Tilapia then eating it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You could, another member on her ate his red devils. I have 6 mozambique tilapias, but I don't have any plans on eating them. That and they are only a couple inches long and way to hard to clean, lol.

Give 'em a year...mine made it to 18in. Great fish to watch and raise.

they taste bad if you do not know how to rid it of that freshwater fish smell
You have to keep them in clear, running (flowing) spring water (called polishing) the last week without feeding before you eat them.

A member here ate his red devils. I dont get it though. Why raise a fish just to eat it:screwy: If i want to eat fish i just catch them or go to the market.

I don't have enough room for a cow. A dog... I'm filipino and we eat dogs... mmm adobo.

Where in hell are you located? :D

Keeping tilapia for food (aquaculture) takes some dedication. There is special tilapia food, sold in 50 lbs bags, high in protein and fats to grow them out faster. they are usually fed 2-3 times a day. And a 300g stock tank might be ok for a few fish, but would certainly be an expensive dinner.

You could use a large plastic swimming pool for a cheap 1000g tank. check other links I think under cheap indoor ponds?

Google tilapia / aquaculture to get a better idea. it can be scaled down, also could take up to 18 months to grow out to a good size.

Keep us posted if you do it.
Good Luck,
Dr Joe

P.S. What sauce with K-9, BBQ ?

Aren't red bellied pacu a food fish in south america? I haven't tasted any, but they grow big very fast.

Not sure why anyone would want to eat tilapia, tank raised or from the supermarket. They don't have the best flavor compared to so many other available fish. Get a 180,000 gallon tank and raise some big-eyed tuna. Now that's good eats!
