Milky Way Galaxy,
Am getting more interested in these guys instead of sturgeon... What kind of trout would be suitable for 1,800gallons with lots of live pond plants, and carbon filter. How many can I have? Are they messy? What do they eat? Is it best to get them from a hatchery or should I go to big bear and catch them my self. Am in Los Angles area! Thanks guys :D

Id get one from a hatchery. Then the fish wont be stressed and tired from fighting against the line

Ok but I want to feed it foods it would only eat in the wild so can he feed on krill, brine shrimp, bloodworms and guppies? How reasonable are hatchers?

It depends on the hatchery some will sell u one fish others wont...most hatchery fish are already on pellets. But getting one from big bear is okay too if u dont live so far away. My lfs had a trout in it and he said some1 gave it to them and they said they caught in from santa ana river lakes which is like 45 min away

Ohh cuz I don't want to feed it always pellets of I have alot.... Am scared if they won't find/or don't take it. It's happened to me before. I want to get alot of them
Can you give me a reasonable estimate how many I can keep? Can will the diet i want to give them
Work?

What water temps (one of the most important water variables for many trout) and water quality is the 1800 gallons going to have? How much Aeriation are you going to have for it? I didnt understand what you were saying about food......were you saying you dont want them to eat pellets? I am sorry but I cant give you a good answer until I get more info.. What diet are you going to give them?

Water temps without my heaters are 65-68f. water is always clear and I do 100g wc a week. For an air pump idk what I will have though? Any big enough for 1800g? Am
Going to have lots of water flow(1-2,000ghp pump&one on the filter). For food I don't want l go e them pellets cause I would run out quickly I want to give them food they would only get in the wild. Krill, ghost shrimp, brine shrimp, guppies and small crayfish in there will that be suitable?

Your temps would be good for a number of trout.....depending on how many trout you want is the big factor in aeriation and filtration. The trout at the hatcheries around here are fed pellets, in the wild they eat lots of scuds, insects and small fish; you should e-mail one of the many trout hatcheries to get more info. on how much you will need and parameters for a 1800 gallon. Shepherd of the Hills fish Hatchery is about an hour away from where I live and they have several resident experts you could e-mail.

You will probably be much better off getting your trout from a hatchery. Talk to them about how many to stock. Trout will eat pretty much any of the foods you mentioned, but if you are going to have a lot of them you will probably have to supplement with pellets just to keep them fed. Purina makes a trout chow available in large bags that would be much more economical than small containers of pellets from the pet store. Check with the hatchery on where they get their pellets. Trout can be voracious feeders. 65-68 on the temp. will be fine as long as you keep them well oxygenated, oxygen is the key. Lots of water movement and aeration.
