Keeping water cool?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know salt water guys will run fans and it can make a couple degree difference, depends a lot on air temp, tank size blah blah blah. Pretty inexpensive way to go, but 86C isnt terribly dangerous for SA/CA cichlids but aeration can be an issue as dragonfish said

throw an extra air stone in or two on a powerful pump..drop your water level a little if you have HOBS so they splash in to the water

the heat should be fine for those fish you just want enough O2 in the tank for them.

How hot is it in the room with the tank? Temps that high would lead me to believe that there is something else adding heat to the tank. Are you running a lot of light on the tank? Maybe cutting back the time the lights are on would help. I know that on my 180, I run a lot of light and with a good lid and canopy, my heaters rarely come on. The tank stays around 78, even when the room temps are in the low 70's.

I highly recommend not using ice, too much fluctuation in your temperature will be a lot more stressing for the fish than high temperatures. Where I live temperatures can exceed 45C+ and some of my tanks have been 30C+ sometimes and the fish have been fine, like Dragonfish said, just worry about the oxygen and as long as the temp doesn't exceed 32C you should be okay, I did have some less hardy fish die at temperatures above that.
If you are still worried check this out.

I've always used the fan idea. Small fan right on top blowing in.
Keeps temps around 80°
