I'm no cichla expert but I think it has to do with what u feed them, genes and water quality....and by bright colors u don't mean the spangles right? Or do you?

I think ceara kelberi are the prettiest ones (I mean in the kelberi specie). God placed the best genes on the fishes that were introduced here, and the nature mixed them to be so spangled/colored as kelberi are.
But I've also seen some kelberi here that are ugly like hell, idk, they just havent any spangles. Dark colored, or even they only have black bars and no spangles except for the tail and fins.
I have a few fish, some have this beautiful pattern and others not, and dont matter the feeding, they dont change it.
I even have some fish with the perfect Ceará kelberi pattern starvating, and he just dont lose his spangles and marks.
I said lose, but really, fish wont lose it, I meant the marks to fade away.
They need carotenoids for the yellow/red coloration, if they cant have it by feeding their will fade away, because their organism cant make those pigments by themselves.
