This seems to be a farily common trait of kelberi. After years of trying I gave up and set up a seperate tank just for feeders so that I could make sure they are healthy and gut load them to ensure I was getting more into my cichla than just goldfish.

I have another kelberi that would eat nothing but live. I got tired of buying golfish feeders every 3 days so I starved him almost to death. Then one day he ate night crawlers. Feeding nightcrawlers is a lot easier than buy goldfish every 3 days.

:headbang2Good to see it here,I love this clip.I have one eight inch Kelberi that along with my Azul eat thawed frozen smelt.I buy a frozen bag of them from the supermarket and I think I starved my bass about a week and a half before dropping in the smelt, first time I cut up the smelt in sections and tossed them in one by one when the bass was near the surface. They splash water halfway across the room and I get a kick out of showing my guests this action.

All my other cichla eat whatever I throw at them. Not the Kelberi....

Although they are my cichla of choice, they seem to be the most stubborn of all cichla that I've dealt with.If my little four incher takes the smelt when he is bigger,I'll feel more confident that I can get them all onto other foods.

I'm glad to see this kelberi still alive.. He's been through a journey.
