Not sure what the issue is with releasing a Koi back into the waters. A koi is the same exact thing as the common carp but with a color mutation.

i'd let him go, definitely, since for one that thing probably lived to see his former owner's grandkids lol
two i don't intend to eat something that pretty, and three, i certainly don't have a pond for a koi that size

I've caught Koi this size in parks, and yes, it's technically appropriate to release them, but Carp are also invasive and it seems people have no issue releasing them.
