Ive been out of the scene for a while with work but been trying to get out of my fish rut now that Im back from work travels and should be home for a while... problem is my kids attachments to the fish, I have some ideas I wanted to try but due to kids cant get rid of a pair of cichla and a pair of convicts lol anyhow... what advice do you guys have for kids getting attached to the fish when its time for change, I tried explaining we should try something new but they get all sad and say nah lets just keep them... so been trying to add more monsters to the cichla harder than I thought, aggression issues along with size... advice needed thanks in advance

You didn't tell us how old the children are...

Let's start with a basic point. Kids don't view the world like adults, and they don't have the ability to see things as rationally and logically as we do. At the youngest ages, they make connections that we don't because we are 'mature' enough to not see things that way.

When you get a pet, it's considered (by some children, especially at younger ages) as part of the family. What does the child think when the adults suggest that family members can be disposed of because they are inconvenient or don't all get along? To the child it's easy: get a new tank, or get a larger one.

So, it's a hard question and one that may seem easy to us, but can be far more important to them.

Here's a link to a site discussing a pet's death and how children at different ages perceive it: http://aplb.org/services/children.html

I'm well aware that death and 'returning' a pet to the store are different to us. I'm sure it's different to children as well, but not as clearly as it is to us.

Tankdempsey they have an Xbox, Wii, and PS3 yes I know spoiled... doc strangelove they are 8 (daughter) an 11(son) Its wierd I shoot the idea of to my daughter why she likes the convicts and why we should find em a new home but she says cause we had them for so long and they will have more babies shes ok with me feeding the fry to the bass? So I ask my son to trade in the bass or sell em and he's like nah remember when they where this small like 3" and what if they have babies again I could never get the eggs to hatch also he grew them for a month while i was gone feeding blood worms when they where small and later for the year feeding massivore and gold. I after making this thread I'm thinking of just to keepn em and try again to get fry from the cichla and keep breeding the convicts for treats but want to go in another direction we'll see got a few weeks off to figure things out thanks for the responses

Get another tank!!! One that is " yours".
Let your daughter run the Convict tank, and let your son run the cichla tank. It sounds like they've done a great job since you've been gone, why take that away from them.

Exactly. And at 8 and 11 a fish tank would start to teach them responsability.

id say just let them keep them if they cared for them. either get a new tank for yourself or put up with it until the fish pass on

Bit confused here.
If your son and daughter took care of both the tanks without much problems then why take it away from them?
I thought child's happiness is priority?
Let them keep it and if you don't like it, put up with it.
