Temp wasn't a problem. I didn't have an air pump, but I didn't think the fish could run out of oxygen in an hour in five gallons of water. I wasn't going to leave him in there that long.
I'm thinking that based on what I have read that the fish was on his way out so to speak. I can not see melafix killing something so quickly. Aeration is a key factor. This needs to be understood but you didn't leave the fish in a bucket overnight without aeration or filtering did you?? If not this is probably not the cause of death. I have used both melafix and pimafix with success but it depends on if you are using them for the proper symptoms. Example: A bacterial or fungal infection that is too far gone cannot be blamed on mela/pimafix. Likewise there are limitations to what the products can do. Some bacterial and fungal infections are beyond the realm of what mela and pimafix are capable of.
The fish wasn't on its way out. It was moving fine and otherwise healthy except for the marks on its face, which I was concerned was the start of hole in the head.
sorry for your loss. honestly, melafix is sold at walmart, and that is the sole reason i won't treat fish with it. sounds crazy, and i cant get more clear with why but thats why i don't use it
I have to say, I don't know for sure that it was the melafix. Maybe he did run out of air, maybe something was wrong with him that I couldn't see, maybe something somehow contaminated the container I was using, but I don't think those were the problems. I appreciate all of the theories though. I am trying to learn from this experience.
