Killer Livebearer. Belonesox Belizianus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got lucky and spotted this fish in a tank full of goldfish. I picked it up for about $20:)

Looking at your photo it appears to be a "she" Belonesox. They are easy to sex with the males having more color and a pointed gonopodium fin.

I had a pair for a couple of years and they would breed regularly. The babies are amazing, they are pretty big at birth and have a nice dark stripe. At only a few days old the babies would eat full grown live brineshrimp and would eat new born guppies after a week or so. The babies must be removed from the tank immediately or the parents would eat them.

Great fish, but a little skittish and they only eat live food - and lots of it!

I've had good success getting live only fish on dead food, so I'll do my best with this one as well. I just found an article describing how they're sexed. Pretty easy I found lol. Thanks for the advice! I'll be on the hunt for a male.
