the royal was white no green or black lines just white and i got it to lived
cichlids........... not so much

From my personal experience, I just recently got a "hi-fin spotted pleco" it's probably a colloquial name rather than it's real name, but I caught him sucking on my senegalus's side a couple weeks ago, I haven't seen it latch on since then so I'm not sure if it will continue, but make sure your pleco isn't doing it too regularly. He isn't more than 2.5" so it isn't just large plecos that will eat slime coats. Sorry no pics, it didn't last long and I didn't even think of taking one.

There are species that won't feed on slime coats, but each fish has it's own personality so you may have to find a species that works for you.

One more thing, it isn't just the pleco you have to take into consideration. The fish you're mixing with them also matter, fish that stay still will generally be more likely to be fed on.

Digging it up.... any more?

After 22 years I've never had any plecos suck the slime coat off any fish.. including goldfish which I have kept together for many years.

The only thing I've seen is plecos fighting with each other.

I've never had this happen to me personally, but I have heard from people who had their fancy goldfish killed by their plec...
the slime coat of the goldfish is supposed to taste really good to the plec (other fish too, I guess). and yeah I guess if you don't feed the plec sooner or later he'll take to getting a taste of the fish, may depend on plec (personality, etc.) I dunno.
I've kept a 7" pleco with my common goldfish for a while now, they're all doing fine with no incident.
my theory is that common goldfish are a faster fish, and so are able to nimbly escape the plec if he makes any advances...
If the pleco is kept well-fed, and the fish you keep with it are able to outswim it (shouldn't be too hard... I've never seen a plec swim too fast) you should be fine.
