"my statement wasnt pointed towards you angler. people place values on things they like or care about. im shure lots of us have no problem feeding tilapia fillets to our "oh so prized" fish. whats the difference? do their cold frozen eyes peering through the vacuum wrapped plastic in the market not quietly scream "you did this too me you bastard!" while sounding like the wicked witch of the west?

remember that when you visit the seafood section next time;) "

quote of dmopar74 post

See, this is a statement that I cannot argue with. People do place value on things they care about. Your dog is no more important or no more of a pet than my fish if we care about them to the same degree. That is why I say it is stupid to say that this animal can be a pet, but that animal is only an object. Animals are animals, and their label is dictated by how you perceive and feel about them.

most definitely not a derail but the very real purpose of this thread to bring this subject out for discussion :headbang2

honestly to off this pacu would be the last thing I would want to do, just look at my sig as that is my philosophy of keeping fish best spoken by another mfker

even my fish companies slogan revolves around the concept that we are in fact the god of the fish we keep, no irreverance intended.

So fish are disposable because they are commonly eaten? Dogs are not disposable because they are not eaten in the Western world? Dogs are eaten in some parts of the world. And who is "Western society" to decide what is a pet and what isn't a pet but just food. That's pretty ethnocentric. An animal is an animal. I'm not really getting your point either.

Eat your dog if you wish. All I'm saying is Im not sure how killing a fish is not acceptable. It's done a million times on a daily basis for food, for sport. I wouldn't value any fish more than the bass out of the lake or the barramundi in the frozen food section. They're all on the same level. That barramundi in the freezer pack had the same rights as my tank fish.

It's all just fish. That pacu was raised for food. There are millions of fish that die daily in the tropical fish industry if you look from originating point to the time they get to you. Not sure why we're assigning certain tyoes of fish because they're pets more rights then they really have. As said we keep fish for our entertainment. If we really wanted what's best we would just donate to conservation and not pluck them out of where they're at. Everyone who signed up for this site is a selfish bastard. We take fish that would probably be better off/happier elsewhere and keep them for our entertainment and most of us end up killing a few in the process. Even if we don't kill ourselves, fish died getting our fish to us. I'm ok with it. Not sure why others don't realize it.

Life's too short. Am I going to spare a fish's life and die from a heart attack because he's stressing me out? Don't think so..

personally this is what my core value is with the fish I keep.

If and when a fish passes from my tank regardless of the cause(though not to often is it due to bad water), my thoughts are MEH it is now a lifeless carcase so therefore it goes to the trash.

Whilst my fish are alive though, I give them the best food, best water, best environment I can. I spend on average about 12 hours a week on maintenance, but, that is my choice to run so many tanks.

Lately my biggest fish loss has been from my first overflow sumped tank. In the first 2 days before I rigged up an eggcrate barrier on the overflow I had about 15 fish make the trip over and out the downpipe into the sump. I did not know that smaller fish would fall so readily to the pull of the overflow. Thankfully I was able to pull about half of them out of the overflow or the sump before they died.

I just can't equate animals on the same level as human beings. They are to be loved and treated with the respect and sanctity that living creatures in our care deserve but when they die they die.

On another level with fish, I have always said MEH -FISH EAT FISH!!!!

I am truly impressed with the damage this rampaging pacu can do in such a short time and it's not even a piranha! I can see why they are called tank busters. I just do not want it to eat 1 of the 4 or so rarer fish for this area I have in my tank.

Sashimi anyone muahahhahahahhaha

Exactly, their just fish. :) I like you guys.....in a total non :naughty: way.

Well, I came in tonight to do water changes and if I had a harpoon I would spear both of the pacu.

They are not shy on food at all.

There is lots of space in the 300g.

But when I came in tonight I find bite marks on 7 of the fish in this tank, all of my zebra tilapia have bites, my wild oscar , my albino oscar and a couple of my red terror. And, I moved to a spot where the pacu can not see me as I watch the tank.

Even after I moved the above wounded fish to a 180g, I am watching the pacus tag team on the rest of the fish coraling them in the top left side of the 300g, while they act like playground bullies.

Even when I have placed the food in the normal manner to make sure that it is placed so that everyone gets some, it is like the pacus race to and fro in the tank making sure that the push everyone away from their food so they can eat it and then rush to another spot to do the same, rush to the next spot and then go back to the first. I mean really WTF, I know they eat lots cause I feed them lots but it is like they have gone all Norman Bates!!!!

There are 3 things that are about to happen to these two fish.

1-my add to give them to anyone for free will get answered 2 week time limit
2-I might just move them to a extra 100g that I have and let them suffer it out in there for a month or three!!! At least they will still be alive. And by that time I will have one of the other bigger tanks free to dedicate to them.
3-If my recently wounded fish die from the bite's, I will dispatch of them.

Really sorry if the thought of my wasting 2 pacu is offensive to some people, it is a very real thought on my mind after watching these 2 fish defy the online descriptives I have read about them.

as a side note I already got a reply from a dude who wants them, last time nobody responds

this time when I am actually gonna consider killing them I get a response in less than 10 minutes

personally I wouldn't deal with it. I'de seperate them into the 100gal until you can get them something bigger. and something meaner to live with. never had adult pacus but I have had juvies that have gotten that viciouse. and try and re-home them like you are, or deal with it until you can house them in something bigger.

I can accept that, but I did do a 10hr bus ride and rented a uhaul and picked up a 300g in calgary and drove straight back to regina with it in an effort to house these rehomes properly. I even have a 430g that I am getting in a month or so.

The whole issue for me is this, pacu are so common I can pick one up for $4 at almost any petstore. SO NO WAY ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH AND I GOING TO ALLOW A FISH THAT COMMON TO WASTE MY SOMEWHAT RARER FISH.

The good news is within 1 hr of me posting the free pacu add I have both of them gone tomorrow.:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2
