killing planeria??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have them in my tank, or at least that is what I think they are. They look like stationary caddisfly shells covering the back wall. Sometimes they come out of their shells. They are cool looking and clear... Haven't done any harm, but I bleached the decor and drained out my tank 100% 3 times over and they came back.

I want to see if I have the same things. The things I have look like this:

In a freshwater tank....in a reef tank they can get overwhelming enough to cover corals and kill them. I never had them in freshwater....honestly when I saw the thread I didn't expect to see it was a freshwater tank.

i have no clue when it comes to sw. ive only ever done fw fish. if i move onto sw i will have to try and remember that though.

Well....the title does say "killing planeria??" which leads me to believe that they might want to know what would kill them. I never said that was what he NEEDED to do...just info that it might....kill them. I dont run to meds to fix things that dont need it...but I do share the knowledge that I have from keeping fish....thats all. And who knows....maybe someone else knows of a med not as bad as copper that will do the same thing....and they might chime in with the info...and we all gaine that bit of knowledge so we all win.....except for the planeria :nilly:

Not trying to be rude with my coment either...just answering the question you asked...hard to distinguish with just text :D

Another thougt too is what about clown loaches or some sort of loach. DO they eat them? I know the big Jag might eat the loaches...just food for thought...

Im sorry but did you miss the part of my post that said, the ONLY way to kill rhem was to starve them out???? Thought you might have missed that

Oh, and you have a PHD in planeria killing. Cjill out guys, just offer your suggestion and let it be. I'm sure plenty of people have found that starving doesn't always do the trick.

Ohh I didnt miss it...I just didn't believe it. So I researched it in freshwater a little more.

http://www.planetinverts.com/killing_planaria_and_hydra.html

and more on it

http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/showthread.php?t=52784

and then there is this stuff

http://www.aq-products.com/APpro/clouttablets.htm

and this one list some fish and snails that will eat them

http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/management/Ali_Planaria_Worms.html

now everything I have looked at does point at to much feading and not enough cleaning...so that is the base of the problem....how you take care of them is up to you...but there seems to be more than just ONE option.

Ohh and I still think copper sulfate would work

Im chill baby im chill...I would get into debates at the lfs I worked at with coworkers when we were slow. One guy tried to tell me the city we were in didn't put enough chlorine in the tap water to kill fish.. That was an easy test....with de-chloranator on hand of corse.

:D

As others suggested, clean the tank more thoroughly and dont overfeed. Dont get crazy about it, because they are harmless and you run the risk of causing more damage if you do something drastic.

I can even see algae in your tank and all over the filter intake, so you need to clean that out. But like others said, they clean up extra junk in your tank, so they can be viewed as being helpful rather than harmful.

Now in one of those things I posted it did say something about them getting into the gills of fish and causing them to twitch and scratch. I dont remember if it was the same article but also something about them eating eggs....so they are not totally harmless...if that stuff is true.

:iagree:

Copper sulfate may work but this is overkill IMO. It can not only damage the inverts but also the fish. It's your choice whether you wish to do an overkill or not.;)

Exactly....just giving all the info....others had already said keep it clean so I went the chem route with the thinking. If you don't fix the cause...you will have the same effect :headbang2

I didnt realize the Clout said it would kill them before I thought CS...I have used this stuff for gill flukes in a african tank and it might not be as strong as the CS. Maybe a shot in the arm with that stuff and then change your matinence.

All up to you...
