I just moved to a new house that has well water. It is pretty damn yellow/cloudy so I'm definitely not happy about putting my motoro in her tank just yet. I've got her in a 30 gallon tote with an emperor 400 for the time being, but I'm just really clueless on what to do tomorrow? I've heard renting a water softener would help considerably, but figured I'd ask the experts of mfk before doing anything

^^filters. they just upped the chlorine content and other chemicals in the water in my town and my dad and i are very unhappy about it while doing big water changes. you have my sympathy.

...and i'd shower in yellow water to ensure the health of my fish!

Was there people living in the house before you moved in or was it vacant for a time. Allow your water to run for an extend period though out the house to flush all lines and see if that helps. Could have a high concentration causing the discolor also. If it is an old well it could be the type of plumbing used to lift the water out of the well.

Water departments tend to do this during large rains or in your case heavy snow falls.

Thanks for all the quick help guys. It was vacant for quite some time so hopefully it just needs to be ran through. Any idea how long I should let it run? Hot or cold water? One thing I noticed is the hot water is significantly worse than the cold. Thanks again!! :D

I would focus on cold as thats what you'd be using to fill your tank I would assume. If you don't see any improvement after running for an hour or two then I don't think thats your issue. I dont have well so I could be wrong.

Have you run the standard tests on your well water to see if there is anything more than just the color wrong with it?

If you end up waiting on filters for the water one short term fix would be to fill your tank using the 5 gallon water jugs that you can fill at walmart, not sure if thats RO water they sell there but it is heavily filtered. The walmarts around here have a filling station you can refill the 5 gallon jugs at. Would be a pain, but atleast you could get your tank up and buy some time to figure this well water out.

+1 for JohnG..Great idea. Or he could just go to a friends house with a few 5 gallon buckets.

Again thanks for the awesome help guys. I still have my apartment in the city, so it looks like I will be making about 20 trips with 5 gallon buckets, like you said just to buy some time. Ill be testing the well water today to make sure its chemically okay/stable, then I guess ill go from there. Got a fun day ahead of me!
