Drop the food when you shut your lights off...he will eat when its dark as he is nocturnal like most cats. They are really shy unless they have some friends. Mine likes to school with my 2 smalled synos. I didn't think mine was eating till I rescaped my tank and he nice and chunky. Good luck don't freak if you don't see him eat. :)

Thanks Nick, Will try it tonite and also get him some tank mates ......which are ideal tankmates for sun cats according to you...?

^I agree with the above. Mine eats best with no lights, though he does come out a bit to get food during regular feeding time.

When we first got ours they wouldn't come out to eat at all with lights. They'd just spin in circles in their pvc pipe waiting for food to float in.

Thanks heather, yup my cat goes under the plants and then tank bcomes lifeless....m gonna get some tank mates (advise me on that)....i even thought of removing all aquascape and letting it get used to light...will it work or will just traumatize the fish?

Well them being predatory cats they will eat anything they can get in their mouths. Personally I keep my with some larger cichlids and a couple smaller syno cats. If you can find 2-3 more sun cats he may be a little more active...but as I said mine will cruise with my synos during feeding time under low light. Ill try to get a good pic, mines about 5.5-6 inches

Just let him get settled in, not having any hiding spots will stress the fish out. When I redo my tank I have to leave the lights off due to him spazzing out cause of the light and no dark nooks and crannies

Thats nice...hope my cat also eats well....BTW yesterday my brother went on changing decor of the tanks ( i have 3) he took bogwood from one put it in the Redtail Shovelnose Hybrid tank which also has a gar..the hybrids are 6 inches and gar is 9 inches...hiding in the wood was my 2"sun cat ...who was now with the RTC+TSN Hybrids and a gar....i was worried sick when i cudnt find the sun cat in his tank....but to my surprise the 2" sun was happily swimming with the bigger cats taking a ride below the gar...and the big cats though very hungry at the time din bother the sun cat....its been a day now.....i feel they got along well though i am continously watching...

Awesome fish! I've had mine probably about 2ish years and he's doubled in size from 5 to 10 inches! They're awesome fish and very pretty but extremely reclusive! I feed mine massivore pellets and I hand feed him in the cave so noone else steals his food.

He will get eaten, likely in the first night.

Depends on the fish. Mine has been with a large marble cat and he was plenty small enough to get eaten for a long time, but was never bothered.
I also had a 3" driftwood cat that would come out and night and swim with all the large catfish. He was there for several years, and though it's a possibility he got eaten I'm assuming he just died since he disappeared when he would have been around the right age to have reached the max listed lifespan. I never found his body but he slept wedged tight into driftwood, so that doesn't mean much.

Regardless, I wouldn't trust them not to eat him. It's a good possibility. If they're like my bullhead they'll eat any fish small enough to fit.
