Kingsnake developing large lump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very slim options for herp vets here but I sought out the most qualified. Had an exam and xrays done and its likely a tumor. Digestive tract is clear and its not eggs. They took a sample of the lump and said it was characteristic of an aggressive tumor. Anyways she has slowed down but is alert so I will take it day by day.

Oh man, I am sorry. :(

We are seeing so much more of that in these past years. Do you have city water? :( :( Hugs.

I got a call from the vet, they had examined the samples and found bacterial traces that could indicate it is an abscess, or still a tumor with necrotic tissue. They do not do many reptile surgeries but did offer to attempt to explore and remove it, and potentially euthanize while shes under (which seems like its going to be inevitable anyways). I'm not sure about this though as it likely will be unsuccessful and may be putting the snake which is older through too much stress.

Thanks for the kind words. I do have city water but she has had always had spring water for her lifetime.

Hi,dont wait too much for a visit to your local vet!

Thanks for the tip but my last post was the result of the vet visit.

Bump

Does anyone have experience with abscess vs. tumor? I have read that an abscess can form without noticeable external injury. And the lump has developed rather quickly. Its difficult not having access to good herp vets.

Sorry to hear that. I volunteered at an exotic vet office one summer and got to observe some of the surgeries and pretty much the rule of thumb was that if a snake was to a point that it needed surgery (other than standard ones for things like being egg bound) then it was not going to make it anyways. I would give it some more time and then maybe euthanize it. I hate to have to say that but it will be best for the snake.

Sorry for your problems. I know how it feels to have to do something like this.

I appreciate your input. That seems like the best plan at this point.

Both can be removed, however, if it is an abcess, you have to explore how the abcess was caused. If you don't, it'll come right back........

If it is a Tumor, it may or may not come back if removed. Biopsies would have to be taken to determine what kind of Tumor it is. Then a decision can be made on longevity and what not......

If your Vet doesn't have the experience anesthetizing Reptiles, chances are the surgery isn't going to go well........Age has no bearing on that, as the animal is what I would still consider its teen years......

You can take it however far you want to take it........Its not that hard for a Vet with little experience to consult a Vet with more experience.......I've done it many times, though your Vet will probably have to get over the ego trip for the first few times.......

I had her euthanized today, it came to the point where she was barely moving and very lethargic with the lump growing quickly. I spoke with 'reptile' friends about the situation and it was agreed that given the situation and locally available resources this was the best way to go. Its a huge bummer, this was my first herp when i was 10 becoming a big part of my life. Anyways thanks for the input in this thread.
