Kinosternon scorpioides cruentatum

Thought I'd share some pics of my one juvenile Kinosternon scorpioides cruentatum (Red Cheeked Mud Turtle). I'm trying out an Exo Terra Turtle Tank. It's a nice design but the tank is pretty small and I would only consider them as a grow out tank for some of the smaller turtle species. The footprint of the tank isn't bad at 18"x24". This turtle only has a SCL of 2.25" so I'll keep him/her in here until it gets a tad larger. Currently I also have a school of 9 Ember Tetras along with a female BNP and female Convict Cichlid that I got from the member/mod Msjinkd. It's been about 2 weeks since I added the fish and they're all doing great together.

Nope, I picked up this little one at a reptile show last year. I have a male and was hoping that this one might be a female but I'm beginning to have my doubts. They're a great little turtle species and this guy is so personable it's not even funny! As I'm sure you know they are becoming really hard to find and every adult female I come across is between $200-$400 dollars.

I predict you having to bite the bullet and spend a few hundred to get the female you want. Or a better idea is buy a whole herd of babies! You are bound to get a female out of that plus you have more Red Cheeks. Win-win situation!

Yeah, I've kinda figured that. I did find a female a few months ago but she wasn't colorful at all and she was over $400 so I passed. I see babies for sale every so often but I kind of don't want to wait to grow them out. I got lucky when I found this guy last year at Hamburg. They had two for $75 and this one was the most colorful. I think I'll play the waiting game a bit longer and see if a female pops up that I can't live without.

Thanks Miguel! My male is roughly the same color as this little one as well. So I hear these guys are pretty common over in Europe. Any truth to that?
