So I won an award at work that allowed me to pick a prize off this random website. Most of the stuff was crap that retailed for $100 or so, then I saw a kitchenaid stand mixer, the top end new one (retails for $400). So I have one of those coming in the mail.

Here is my question, and why I ask it here. I'm not a baker or cook in general, I usually grill or stir fry or frozen food. However I know for the last 50 years people RAVE about these things, and I know people that have them who say they couldn't live without them.

So for a normal non fancy cooking guy would I use it / like it? My wife cooks a little but not much, but it's MY prize so we are focused on me here :)

Option two would be sell it on craigslist, could probably get $300+ for an unopened new one and buy myself a more me focused prize (fish gear, computer upgrades, etc).

if you're not gonna use it much, sell it

buy a cheaper one if you are gonna use it only once in a long while. pocket the rest

well, at the pizza place we used ours for mixing dough and shredding cheese. off duty we made sausage with it.

search kitchen aid stand mixer on youtube. lots of stuff. how to make spaghetti, butter, sausage, ravioli, and pizza dough. all on the first page. including vids on several attachments.

That is one amazing piece of kitchen gear, there's nothing you can't do with it, we have 2 of them at my work for things that don't require our floor stand mixer, nice score!

There are kitchen aid mixers that start at just $200, you might have won a low end one. Even if it's a $400 machine, you wont get top dollar . I say keep it because:

  • You will make the best mashed potatoes in it.
  • I use it for scrambling eggs on Sunday morning when Im feeding all the kids and their friends.
  • You can make pizza dough with it really easily
  • Real whipped cream, you betcha. Just work it in a cold bowl
  • Real home made butter. No problem, just keep beating.
  • Home made pasta- you can get a pasta cutter attachment and make killer fettuccine.
