Ive seen a local documentary and was also saw on a local New TV show that the knives have invaded the biggest lake (laguna lake) in one of the three major islands of the philippines. (I live here btw). They said that these knives are eating milkfish, shrimp and tilapia which fishermen harvest. They also bite their way in to fish pens which are situated within the lake.
I went there a month ago and was able to talk to a fisherman and he told me that they came from fish cages that were destroyed by a huge typhoon (Ondoy) 4 years ago and were taken to the lake by the flood. Ive literally seen in person and on TV that the knives they were pulling from the cages are more than a meter long.
Then i remember that ive read on a book years ago by g. Skomal, that they grow to only 36". Also he classified them as notopterus chitala. Then a few years after that i saw a guy who posted here asking where are the "real" chitala chitala's and real featherbacks that are really huge lol. It made me think that they were different due to the size and scientific name. But i guess the book was a bit outdated already.
Whats crazy though is that these knives are barely 4 years old and they're at that size already. I cant find the record catch but i have a hunch it will be broken. :/
This picture i googled was posted june 2013. Im prett sure they still grew from then. The ones ive seen will make my own 18-20" knife look small. Im pretty sure he's not even half of them:/
It made me think of the possibility of having huge monsters here. We already have a problem with a bunch of invasives. Huge Micropeltes and the big head and common carps along with large mouth (?) huge bass were caught in a dam up north. Then knives here.
And then theres that marshland down south that's pretty much uncharted. Thats where they discovered one of the biggest crocs (Lolong) so who knows what fish swims in those waters😁
Wow! Nice! Everyone says they only get 24 inches and i ALWAYS call their BS on it. My LFS said that a 36 incher came in once that had outgrown a tank didn't see it though to prove it. Any pics of monster (28"+) in aquariums?
