Hi everybody, I just wanted to know some basic information about knifefish. I've never had one before, but I want to get one now. How big do they get, what can I keep w/ them, stuff like that... thanks in advance.

There are many different species of knives. I have 2 of the most common ones, the clown knifefish and the royal clown knifefish living in my monster tank.

They both grow big and are now in the 16-20" range (can get up to 3'). They are predators that eat meaty foods, but are more nocturnal so often chill out during the day time, especially when smaller.

There are smaller kinds of knives that are quite timid and will only reach about 8" e.g. brown knives. I haven't kept them, but you can give them a try if you only have a small tank.

Good luck!

Here's an old pic...

I don't know, I don't even know about any other than the BGK, clown, and the brown knife pretty much.

There are Asian, African, and South American species. The Clown Knife is the most commonly seen in the Asian catagory and they can get 30". African Brown Knife is the next and they only get 8" on average. And Black Ghost Knife would be the more commonly seen from South America and they can get 20" on average, but grow really slow compared to other Knife fish.

Alright, thanks man. I'll keep that in mind. I like to go big w/ my fish. Nice pic even though it's old. Anybody have any pics or names of some less common knives?

try a Papyrocranus afer or an aba aba...but i warn you these guys are a little agressive..and the aba aba gets to about 3 ft. in an aquarium environment...

here's an old old thread about some uncommon knifefish..these knives are pretty nice hope this helps....:)

Alright, thanks. My g/f likes the BGKs, but I don't know... I like 'em and all though. I don't want no little 8"er. I wanna go monster :headbang2
