Knives?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd go with Spyderco myself. Gerber is good in the short run, but anything you can buy at walmart is not something I recommend. Spyderco is also one of the few people that does S30V steel, which is a tool grade steel, one of the hardest and best edge retention steels you can buy. If you're looking for longevity and quality, that's where I'd look. Beretta and CRK make good knives that are a bit cheaper. It really depends on what you're looking for. If you're wanting something to use all the time around the water, I'd go with titanium, and you'll probably have to go to a dive shop for those.
Hope this helps,

I've had my Gerber single side with bottom seration river knife for 17 yrs- never failed me when I guide (whitewater guide- knife is known as a river shortie now- I have the original with pointed not blunt tip and full metal handle). Even if they are now sold at Walmart, that doesn't mean Gerber is a bad knife. Have another 2- one is a larger fold out for fishing (6yrs. old - and we did get it at Walmart) and another small fold out that is 15yrs. old- has a small cracked out piece on the plastic but works fine- keep it on my keychain (that's how it got broke - 12 yrs on the keys). They make good knives- do need the occational sharpening.

Glad to see there have been some good experiences with Gerber, mine have not been so positive. Spyderco or Case is still my vote, but almost any knife that fits your needs can suffice with a little bit of care. Depends on the amount of care you want to give your blade. Higher carbon steel is harder, stays sharper longer, but rusts more easily. Stainless doesn't rust (as easily) but it much softer and sometimes is only a stainless coating that wears off. Good luck.

S30V steel is not a tool steel-It is a soft steel that can't not be used as a prying tool or anything similar......It is one of the best for edge retention (holding an edge)-But stuff like zdp-189 will smoke it-
Stuff like D2,01 are tool steels along with many other's.....

The thing is with gerber and stuff alike-
is the heat treating it goes through-They work on too large of a scale to get them all right-
thats why they are hit and miss-
Some will say gerbers are fine knives and some will say they are complete garbage---Both are correct when stating this......
If they would reduce their number for heat treating their knives-their quality would be alot higher than what it is....
