I caught wels last year in spain. You can take away live fish that are upto 140lbs. There are 1,000s of them We caught about 20 cats that were over 130lbs in one week.

All you need then is a jumbo to take them home. Nice thought eh!

Acipenser ruthenus. Lepomis gibbosus. Cottus poecilopus. Cottus gobio. Blicca bjoerkna. Esox lucius (predator!).Lampetra fluviatilis (cool fish!). Lampetra planeri. Misgurnus fossilis ( a common fish you can find in most petshops). Zingel zingel.
I hope this will help you.

Sounds like an awesome experience. If anybody wants a monster wels, let me know, because handling anything over 2lbs will prove difficult.

1K each :grinno: What's a fair price though? I don't want to over charge. How about 20-150 each depending on size and how many I can collect? What should I look for that assures what I have is a wels, not a hybrid or similar cat?

Hmm. Im not 100% sure how you make sure it's pure wels..
i'd totally be happy with a wels-hybrid though, and im sure most other people would be ok with it. :D

I guess I'll bring back whatever wels looking cat I find I and post an ID thread. :)

Sweet.
you might want to see if wels are legal in the US though. Those could probibly do some SERIOUS damage as invasives.

i'd say go out and catch what ever you can

I don´t know how it is in France, but at least in Germany you can´t just go to a lake or river to catch fish. You need an official liscence to do this. Furthermore you will hardly ever get most of the species mentioned here, especially sturgeons which are at the brink of extinction. To find lampreys would be also extremely hard, and they are also protected. The best way to get fish is to go to a fish-breeder and buy them there. You can get in general a lot of species, for very low prices and small sizes, and all completely legal. A very cool fish which can be sometimes found at fish breeders is Misgurnus fossilis. I hope I will once found some for my pond. I suppose anyway that it would be extremely hard to keep most of the fish alive from Europe to the USA, especially those which need cold water and high levels of oxygen. BTW, there are no hybrids of the wels, because it is the only member of its genus in nearly whole Europe (except in Greece where the smaller aristotle catfish occurs).
