One question, are you worried about the sump overflowing if the power goes out?
I'm actually in the middle of doing this myself.

If the sump is sized right and gravity feed from the tank it should have enough space to hold the water from the tank during a power faliure. There should be a shipon break in the overflow so that once it reaches a certain level it stops draining the tank.

i have plenty of room to hold backflow during power outages, and periodicaly (when i turn the pumps off to change water) check to be sure the sump will hold all the water it needs to if power fails

your pond is sick!!!
Post some pics of the fish

It is actualy my brother in law's pond, but I consulted on the build and built the filter which is no longer in use (though it still works great). The pond is stocked with blue gouramies that began breeding like wildfire once the pond filter and waterfall were shut down. Now with the gouramies doing so well and the pond self sustaining there are no plans to turn the pumps back on.

The eggcrate came in a large sheet (found at Lowes / Home Depot) and I think it was just over 4' x 2'. it holds the light up just fine. the only caution is when taking it on and off some of the corners fit snug and could snap if I'm not carefull. next time Ill include some sort of access panel.

Thanks, and nice setup you have btw! I had the idea before but wasn't sure if it would work, but that's cool, i'm gonna test it out, but I think i'm going to cut it into a couple sections, so I can take half out at a time.

thanks again
