i just got my first koi yesterday, its just a petsmart koi, but when i get the hang of them ill get better ones. but its been hiding alot, matterfact its hiding all the time. how long does it take for him to get used to the pond and come out? hes in there with a comet thats like half its size and some gambusia to control mosquitos. you think he needs another koi his size?

ive been with koi for a long time and i think mayb adding another 2 will help alot. my koi dont really hang out with my comets since ther alot faster than the comets. also try to provide some shelter in the pond if you dont already have

i bought two a couple weeks ago and they got along with my comets first feeding they came out and always since. they live hiding under my plants though but theyre always swimming

with me i had a few smaller koi that were also skittish thhey started to settle when i put a 10 inch koi in the pond as well i also grew a few koi in a ank indoors for a while they get very tame that way nd take that tameness to the pond

as of the moment i can either buy another koi his same size and another small koi or, i can buy 2-3 medium sized koi ( about a couple inches shorter than the 1 in the pond). what do you think is best for him?

also i have a cinder block with 2 big holes they can use as caves, and couple terra cotta pots, and a pot with plants in it. thats whats there for hiding in my pond right now. working on getting more plants.

How big is your pond?

Give him some time, mine took a year to get fully adjusted. Gettin himsome friends will def. help, but only if space allows.

sorry i forgot to mention, the small medium large i was saying is PETSMART's definition of them. i have a petsmart ML koi which is about 8inches. my pond at the moment is a 500g but ive been looking around for materials to extend the pond to be either 1000g or more. when the koi get larger ill have already the meterials to extend it. the pond is made of cement i think so itll take some elbow grease to smash part of it down.

still wondering what i should do 3 options
1) 1 same size koi, 1 koi half his size
2) 3 koi 2-3 inches shorter than him
3) 1 of the above and comets
