Milky Way Galaxy,
Hey guys, just picked up a pretty Koi today!:headbang2Anything important i need to know? He is in a 800gallon pond heated to 75F. He's with One ID Shark, and One Channel. He hangs out with the ID more cause he is almost the same size as him. Am going to start feeding him Chichild Medium Floating pellet.

Well things to know... they will survive longer and will be healthier in a room temp pond. NOT a heated pond. If you ever need to treat your koi, you will have ruled out the option of just heating the water because the kois immune system will already be used to the warm temperature. Not to mention that koi don't need heated water. They are NOT tropical fish.

Why are you going to feed cichlid pellets? It's NOT a cichlid. Just go out and buy some koi food. It's cheaper anyways. PLUS, koi don't need a meat diet.. they prefer other things... you can feed them spinach, oranges, shrimp, peas... but Koi don't have stomachs, they need carbs, and that's what koi food is. Just buy koi food.

If you knew nothing about keeping koi, you should not have gotten it. It's
not a goldfish.

Get rid of the ID shark, and stop heating your pond. It's going to do more harm than good.

I keep koi for a living, and this is the most ridiculous thing I've heard. If you want a tropical pond, and a koi pond, then you need to have 2 ponds!

koi live in tropical areas just fine. just need to make sure the water is oxygenated. you think people dont have koi ponds in southern florida?

no one said they don't or couldn't live in tropical areas. But any fish keeper knows that you don't mix fish. Just like you don'tix African cichlids and south American cichlids because they have different needs. Koi thrive better in water that's cooler. They are not tropical fish so heating the water is doing more harm than good and koi ate very sensitive to water parameters. Keeping it in a tropical based pond or tank is asking for trouble. The fish will be dead in no time or covered in ulcers. It's just not ideal for these fish to be together.

If he wants koi and tropical he needs two separate ponds. It's really that simple.

any experienced fish keeper knows that that is a case by case basis.

i keep jewel cichlids (african) with convicts and flowerhorns.

Jewels are lake victoria, not rift lake, so they should be kept in normal hardness and pH anyway. But I agree, plenty of odd combos work out fine.

Am going to get some Koi food tomorrow. But ifeed my catfish the Chichild Medium Pellets, is it okay if he eats some? Or should i just drop in some shrimp? i just did that yesterday and dont like feeding them again the same thing. I want them to have z balance diet.
