Koi in a 180 gallon aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hope you won't do koi in a 180. I've been raising koi for about 15 years. If you keep their water clean, they can go from egg to over a foot long in one year. Also, koi are usually intended to be viewed from above (in a pond) and their colors/markings often are not that great when viewed from the side.

There are hobbyists that keep koi in aquariums....not the best way to do it however...Like most people have said, they get big... The key is water quality and koi are messy fish with big appetites... if you do the aquarium thing, lots of water changes and minimal food and excellent filtration would be required and they will still probably out grow the system and need to be re-homed... they do look best when viewed from the top, but I've seen some killer ponds with windows in the side and it is cool to be able to view them that way, too...

Yea well I certainly wont be upgrading. But those are good suggestions. Any other koi-like fish that stay under 24 inches?

Kois will overload your filter as their wasteload is scary. Can it be done yes, but should you no. 1 as every one mentioned waste, 2 they grow tremendously fast from 5in to 18"+ in a 4-6month period some may get bigger. They are very robust too. Goldies dont' get as big as kois but they are similar. Barbs are koi/carp like and masheers too, or hi fin shark.
