Wow.....can fishkeepers really make the argument that a certain fish belongs in an outdoor pond? The same argument can be made that whatever you have in your tank, doesn't belong their either. Taking wild fish, even if it's tank bred it came from somewhere and putting it in a glass box, in your house, and hand feeding it, so natural i'm sure. Get over yourselves and contribute something positive to the conversation

We are only stating the facts. There are fish that shouldn't be in tanks, but many smaller fish are fine in tanks because they don't grow large. For example: The African Butterfly Fish- its maximum size is 6"... A koie however can get up to 3'+.

We are not bashing anyone, but Koi are a lot harder to care for than people think. They get sores and ulcers and are much more water sensitive than your average fish tank fish.

This morning I went down to my 1500 gallon indoor koi tank, and one of my 3" has a stomach ulcer, and was developing dropsy. This is often something that happens with small koi, but instead of just saying "oh, it's just one fish" the entire tank got a water change, as well as a Potassium Permanganate treatment.

In Japan, Koi mean royalty, elegance, peace, and love.. to most people in the states, they are just a CARP. It's sad :(

Koi don't belong in tanks, it's that simple. It's a FACT, not being negative, just informative.

So you're saying if I have a 3000 gallon pond in my backyard, I can have a koi in it. But if I lift that pond, give it a viewing window and build a house around it, suddenly it's all wrong? Same water, same fish. Where are you seeing a difference?

No, we are talking a fish tank... there is a big difference. We are talking a fish tank... something with a hood, stand etc...

And even if you were to keep them in a fish aquarium, why would you? They are to be viewed from the top.

i agree with knifegill if you have a huge pond sized tank you can keep pond fish in it, however think that most people dont have the money to set up pond sized tanks and run them effectively though.

Most people call them indoor ponds at that size. haha.

I have an indoor pond with my koi in it. I think we are all talking about the norm fish tank...

Why are koi to be viewed from the top? What makes them so special only they are to be viewed from above? Oh, and why is it when you go to an public aquarium its called an aquarium and not a indoor pond?

Koi are to be viewed from the top because that is where their pattern lays. It's not like a frontosa, or a Jack Dempsey or any other AQUARIUM fish that has it's pattern on the side of the body.

Large scale Aquariums are for viewing SIDE patterned fish.

This thread is about keeping koi is a normal freaking fish tank. It has been done, but it will severely stunt the koi's growth, life expectancy, it's health, and not to mention they are dirty. You will be doing water changes every single day.

No one asked you to be a smart ***, we are just simply stating the obvious.

Here is why you should look at koi from above:

That's not the point. They are POND fish... You don't keep a Great white in a Bath Tub, why would you keep a Koi in a tank?!
Because, koi get to around 3', great whites get to about 21'. I don't see why it would be a problem to keep koi in a tank as long as it is at least 4' wide, 3' deep and has plenty of length (I know, those dimensions are unrealistic to most people, but this website contains plenty of proof that it can be done, just not for the average fish keeper).

How is that sad? That's like saying "...to most people in the US, guppies are just LIVEBEARERS. It's sad :(." Last I checked, koi are "just" carp. Their value in one culture has nothing to do with what they actually are, and really, is irrelevant to the topic being discussed.
