Yes, the cat will grow faster than the koi, but the koi will still grow fast enough to be bigger than eating size. In a 5500 gallon pond (yours) you won't have any problems. I have has 4 inch fancy goldfish be fine with 20 inch channels. DO NOT get a blue catfish though, they get so big they could eat an adult koi.

Here is the pic I posted a while ago just to give you an idea.

Don't contradict me! Just pretend that I am right and move on! LOL

koi and gold fish would be fine with natives, until a bluegill gets ticked at the koi, sunfish can be very aggressive at times, you would need lots of space

Its not a weak, docile fish. They can hold their own against the bluegills. My koi is in my 220 gallon aquarium and is king of the tank even with a 14 inch tiger oscar in the tank with it. Sometimes to establish dominance the koi will go face to face with the oscars and the oscars will move out the way. It is not afraid of nothing and has already once demonstrated it will not tolerate any crap out of anyone. Similar to the aggressive stance pacu and oscars display when being shoaled...it faced all four oscars head on and with one swoop of the tail it was like a bowling ball knocking pins. Since then no one has messed with it.

So far I have noticed that koi are excellent sand cleaners. It will inhale sand and literally filter waste/ food particles (eewe!) from the sand then spit the sand out. If something is not the same color as the nice white sand...it will get eaten by this fish! Sand stays clean all the time now.
One other note...I don't know if all or most koi are prone to being predators...but my koi will stalk and consume feeder fish. I watched it chase down and consume 2 earlier tonight. I would assume koi do the same in ponds with smaller fish as well:confused: .
So..............................
I would say try and find some koi 15"+ and then put some baby cats in there. Catfish and koi do look very awesome together espacially if you can find some nice albino cats. Good luck!

Koi are one of the longest living fishes on earth.

HANAKO - THE KOI THAT LIVED 226 YEARS
Hanako was the oldest Koi on record in the Japanese Islands. Hanako was born in 1751, 25 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence! The name has been well known by the foreign fanciers and specialists as well as among the Japanese. Hanako died on July 17, 1977 ending her life at age 226 years.

i tried to put a 9inch koi in with a 12-13in largemouth. the bass swallowed half of him when he was still in the bag so he had to go to a diffrent tank...

It is not only a matter of size, behavior often is the key, I would not put any other fish smaller than "1%" of the predators size if it is one like a pike (Esox sp.) or whatever is about to swallow anything that moves. And "largemouth" ...the name tells everything ;)
