Well, the Male Cichlid thinks he is posturing/squaring off with another Male.So to appear bigger/more dominant the Nuchal Hump will grow.So yes, this theory is true. Some fish are afraid of their reflection,i've seen the mirror technique make many big tough cichlids swim to the other corner afraid!!! Youll know which kind of toughie yours is the second he sees his reflection!!

Mine flares up attacks the reflection but I haven't noticed any increased kok size, then again I'm not even sure if mines a male.

welli am sure mine is a male but he is not scared just seems interested but when i move the mirror around seems to be a little more aggressive

Whenever I hold up a mirror to my convicts and angels, they cower away like they just saw Rosie O'Donal.

I don't know about being mean and cruel but I did mine to see how it would react and the mirror was only shown for a half hour at most. After about 10 minutes mine lost interest anyways and I agree about the oversized kok.

If you really want it to get bigger get a bigger tank or cleaner water, those 2 both seem more successful to me.

I have had a male in with other males, tried mirrors, and males with females and nothing worked until I moved him to a bigger tank with more filtration.

Its mostly in the genes though, if it doesn't have a big hump, it won't, not every one does.
