Thanks guys! One of those lessons learned kind of things... I am working on making a cover for that area so this will not happen again with the next one I get.

UI keep on thinking of the what if... What if i would have woke up sooner that morning, could I have saved it? What if I would have not done QT and just put it in my main tank, would it have done fine?

Yep, lots of stuff whirling around in my mind on this. In the end I just have to just admit that stuff like this happens no matter how hard we try.

Yesterday rex jumped to his death. I was pretty bummed and did not post. Today Im a bit clearer headed.

This is how tight my plastic strip is. The fish made it out that little spot!

If I would have straightened it out I would call it 14" for sure. He managed to jump out that little spot that the water comes in at with the hob filter. It is a pretty tight little spot but it accomplished it. Found the fish on the other side of the two car garage! It made it quite a ways. I tried to revive it and manage to get a little mouth movement and fin twitch but it was too far gone.

Another bichir is in the future but I am going to make a cover for the filter somehow before I get another.

Sorry for your loss. YES, bichirs can survive many hours out of the water & still make it if found in time. This happened to me on separate occasions when I first started collecting larger bichirs. As for the small gap near you HOB, it MORE THAN LIKELY did not jump out of that small spot (although it is possible)...... they are powerful & can easily just tip the lid open. I've seen this happen many times. So next time you put a big bichir in quarantine, put heavy books on top of the lids...... and if possible QT in an acrylic tank w/acrylic lids...... when glass lids are weighted down, bichirs can break/shatter the glass .......

Had not considered that. The 75g has the thinner glass tops and it may have been able to get enough momentum to pop the lid out...

Yeah you'd be surprised how powerful polys are. I've had some large ropes do basically the same thing. A bichir that big if the tank top isn't weighted down, can absolutely pop it up. That's why when I had my larger polys in my 75g I have cases of water on the top of the glass so they would pop it open. In hindsight they could've cracked it, but luckily that never happened and none got out.

Sad to hear that Kolibasaurus Rex jumped out.

Cover should be weighted as they can push out the lid without any prob. I had an ornate female that lasted 1 week since it committed suicide. Went home too late to save it. It was hard to accept as they cost a lot here and took me a few months to hunt it down and convince the previous owner to sell it to me. Shxt happens, I guess, you just need to be prepared to prevent it from happening.IMG_0869.JPG
