Can someone tell me more about these cute little fishies? Pics, adult size, attitude, set up, etc. I probably spelled it wrong too. They're fairly cheap and I think they're cute, so I want to do some research before I purchase.:D

They are an african river fish. Not CA/SA. They only get about 4 inches, are easy to breed, do fine in most tap water. They are semi aggressive, I used to have a pair with a pair of angelfish in a planted tank.

See, lol, I knew I'd screw something up with them.:screwy: What's their max size? Any pics would be nice too.:D

I have a male and female in a tank with some flower pots I broke in have to make them a cave and it only took a week and the MALE is holding I find that sooo amazing and they both protect the cave and stay in there all the time right now but I do have some pics of them I will try to upload them later I will also post pics when the fry get released!! I can't wait!!

Cool! I'd really appreciate it! Looking forward to those pics.........................

NO prob I took pics last night I just need to put them on my computer... I think the best setup for them would be with sand however I have gravel in mine right now and they have a 30 gallon long breeder tank and the caves are a must if you want them to breed also color can be tricky if the are stressed and not showing and but when they have their color they both have a pinkish purple on their bellys but the male gets the color on the face also... the females often are smaller with pot bellies since they carry the eggs.... Is cool though how both parents raise their young!!

Pelvicachromis sp. are not mouthbrooders. They are substrate spawners, typically laying the eggs on the roof of their cave. The eggs hatch after 2-3 days, the fry aren't swimming until another 3-4 days after which both mother and father will lead them around the tank to search for food, constantly twitching to signal their fry and corralling their fry in numerous pits they will dig around the tank. Their pits are not deep so they don't ruin planted tanks but they do become very protective of their fry while caring for them and consequently quite aggressive. In a community setting the fry usually get eaten. In the pair only setting, that should be a minimum of 20 gallons, the pair will grow their fry to about 1/2" when they decide to start on a new batch. If not removed older fry will pick off new fry and parents may target older fry as threats to their new fry.
These are some pix of my kribs. They're lots of fun!

They are soooo cute!! I thought the male held the fry in his mouth?? Thats what the book I have says and it sure looks like he has something in his mouth plus he hasn't eaten anything for 2weeks...???

Kribs are cave only spawners and will not spawn out in the open like other cichlids. Clay flowerpots and PVC pipes make good caves for them to spawn in. They are very easy to breed. The female is usually first to start courting the male. She will show her colours and give vertical displays for the male. Once the pair has formed they will choose a spot to spawn and clean out the cave (flowerpot/pvc pipe etc.) and the female will deposit anywhere from 50-300 eggs, and the male will follow up and fertilize them. The female and male take turns guarding the eggs while the other goes out in search of food. Typical of other cichlids as well, they give a vertical display to signal shift change. The eggs hatch around 3 day's later sometimes longer, and the wigglers are transferred to a pit or other areas by the mouths of the parents. After about 5-10 more days the fry become free swimming, and begin to feed on organic matter, crushed flake or baby brine shrimp. Remove the fry after they are around half an inch and not too soon, because if you remove them to early the male make beat on the female to the point of death because he will want to spawn again and she may not be physically ready.

well I just found this online so I guess the male isn't holding but mabye the fry are in the cave and he is protecting them?? I guess I will have to lift the cave up to get the fry out??
