Krobia sp. 'Xingu Orange Spot' can't make up their minds!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Now that is what I call purebred.

Yep, mine are darker too. They don't usually show the mask on the face or black markings at all because of the light tank background. Most of the time they're all a white color with the orange flecks. Tonight they seem to be taking a break. The female is still investigating the pot but the male isn't as flirty. I do notice that he gets extremely aggressive with her when I put bloodworms in the tank. I have no idea why.

I bought another group of juvies from Jeff Rapps a few months ago. My original four would rather fight than spawn. The males beat each other up, then they beat the females up. For now they've all been moved back into my 150 gallon community. In the smaller 55 gallon they were just attacking each other all the time.

Eventually I will mix my new group with the four adult fish I have. The weird thing is that the new group from Jeff look completely different than my original fish. My original fish were always very lightly colored and are white/silver most of the time. The new ones are always dark orange with jet-black bars. The new ones are also way more aggressive -- they are beating the crap out of each other constantly, worse than my four adults do.

Bill, not sure if your question was directed to me or to Matt, but my adults are 4 - 5". The males are developing the tall, square forehead now and bulking up a bit more. They do great with other fish and are a pretty addition to a community tank, but they can be a bit rough with each other.

Two of mine have been in breeding dress for about three weeks or so now in my community tank with my GT, Mollies, Corys and another Krobia that has been pushed to the other end of the tank. They go through all the motions of fiairing, head shaking, circling and so far nothing! I was thinking of setting them up in thier own tank but I think I'll wate a little longer I was afraid that without the other fish to chase and team up against (they form a united front against any other fish that get too close) they might turn too aggrisive towards each other. It is frustrating most other pairs would be getting ready for thier sencond spwan by now.

^ How old are they? I think a few of the people I talked to said theirs didn't spawn until they were about 2 years old. Mine are a little over 2 years now but still nothing but flirting and chasing. They will darken up, shake their heads, twitch their fins, tubes will drop... then the male will beat the crap out of the female and she'll hide for two days. That puts her out of the mood really quickly.

The sad part is that I've seen really swollen tubes on both of them at different times, meaning they've both made dry-runs. They just don't seem to do it together, but rather on different days and in different spots in the tank. *shakes fist*
