Anyone here have them? What are they like? I've been doing some researching and a majority of the sites say they are shy unless there are at least 4 of them and that they are escape artists. Post your experiences. Thanks.

I have one. I went about 2 months never seeing it. Even when moving all ornaments around. They are very good at hiding. To give you an example, I have a bare bottom, 1 pvc pipe and 1 fake stump and still can't find him upon looking. He does come out a lot but on his terms. Really cool fish but very very timid to light and people. I only have 1 and I would suggest a pack of like 6+'

Hello; I currently have eight in a community 55 gallon. I have kept them for much of five decades of fishkeeping.
I have had singletons on occasion that have done quite well alone. They can do well alone or in groups.
They get along in groups quite well. I have found that having a number of hiding places encourages mine to be out and about. I suspect they know there is a secure place to be if they get spooked and will be out more.
I make hiding places by stacking pieces of slate. It seems that such places are too small for the other fish but suit them just fine. I like to make at least two seperate stacks in different parts of a tank. They wil share the hiding places.
I have four of the banded kuhlis and four of the black.
My tank is also fairly densely planted.
From time to time a kuhli will swim in loops about the tank for hours at a time. I do not know why for sure but have heard that barometric changes as an explaination. However they all do not take part, so????
I keep my kuhlis with other small fishes. Some tank mates have included zebra danioes, tiger barbs, serape tetras, cherry barbs, cory catfish. I would be concerned about placing them with larger fish as they might become a meal.

Do they dig tunnels?

hello; No. I have not observed that. I use small gravel as a substrate so that would make it very difficult for a small fish to dig in. They will burrow in amongst the plants and stuff that happenes to be in a tank. They might be able to work into sand, but i have not observed this.

Some years ago I found one in the cavity created by the plate of an undergravel filter (UGF) when tearing down a task. The UGF had not been in operation for some time. I suspect the kuhli must have gone into the tube where the bubbles normally discharge. I guess it must have been coming out to feed as it was fat and healthy.

They are able to get into very small spaces.

if you have plants with roots your khulis will burrow down in next to them. (I love watching them come up from under my Brazilian Sword) Mine do the weird loop thing every night as soon as it gets dark. I think it might be a courtship thing.

I have one and had it in my 10g when I first started. I thought something happened to him because he all of a sudden went missing. Literally two month later i took apart my filter motor and he was in there. Just a lot bigger. Hes still doing well now, idk how the propellor didnt hurt or kill him. He hides unless im feeding or the lights are out. Hes really fun to watch though.
