Kuhli Loaches?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used to have a shoal of them that died when my tank crashed (heater stuck on) they were really cool. They danced around like a bunch of confetti lol. They didn't really dig tunnels but they had a tendency to burrow hollow spaces underneath ornaments and driftwood. Totally peaceful and awesome fish. I actually forgot they existed. I may buy some for my planted tank.

My dad told me a similar story about one that burrowed under an undergravel plate and eventually got too fat or was unable to get back out. He found a huge loach in the ribs of an ugf plate when he tore the tank down. He said he was "fat and happy" and was also a very pale complexion from being in the dark for so long.

They are crafty little punks. They'll get into any nook and cranny you can even imagine.

-edit- I've only had brown kuhli loaches, never black or striped.

I'm really glad you liked my story. I have another one for you: a couple years ago, when my kids were born, I was tearing my tanks down and selling or giving my stuff away because I wasn't going to have time. In my big tank I had had a pair of red tail loaches (can't recall proper name.... maybe its just red tailed loach) but kept losing them. One day I realized I hadn't seen them in weeks, so I began watching out for them and even taking apart the big tank hoping to see them. At least three times I did what I thought was a thorough enough search that they had nowhere left to hide without tearing the tank down to the gravel. Well, comes the day the big tank is going to come down and I have a guy there to pick up some fish. I show him the different fish I have but I also explained how my red tailed loaches had apparently died as well. Finally, I pull the last, and largest stone out of the center of the tank and out pops the two red tails! I was dumbfounded! They had tunneled UNDER the rock were living there for a few months. In the tank routinely got an assortment of dry foods, black worms, and scuds, so I think they were living off of any live food that were missed during normal feeding times, but they looked in excellent health despite my not figuring them into the feeding routine any longer.

I sort of miss those guys, but then again I rarely saw them and doubt I'd ever buy more. Definitely sounds like the experience you we're dscribing except I actually managed to completely miss them despite searching. I badly underestimated just how well a fish could hide.

Haha, wow. This is why I try to limit my hiding spots now for my loaches as much as I can. It seems like with some loaches, if you give lots of hiding spots, they usually take them & disappear for a while at times. Glad you ended up finding them

Also picking up 5 or 6 Pangio Myersi this week, can't wait to get them. Now that I've seen pics of the albino version, I'm instantly on the search for them now,lol

I have a red one, a brown one, a white(ish) one, an albino and 3 black ones. I can't even find the striped sumatrans anymore except online. None of mine have stripes they were called khuli's but I think they're a separate subspecies or something. Same behavior but I think they get a little bigger. If I give my loaches the option of being invisible if they feel like it- I see mine all the time (especially in the morning and early evening)

I have 8 of them in a 30G setup for them only with some shrimp and a few ottos. There are a couple of coconut caves and a stone formation out the back plus all the rest is covered in leaf litter. They've divided all hiding places between themselves. All I see when I look in the tank is curious noses, whiskas and tails sticking out. They are quite active like that but kind of invisible. However, each morning when I walk in they are dancing like lunatics in the dark and quite often do it with the lights on, so I see them enough.

I'll try to get some. I haven't taken anything of them recently but I have an old video to show
