Hello everyone,
I just purchased four juvenile L066 from Aquabid and was looking for a little information about them. I have done some research on them and it is my understanding that they grow appox. 4.7", need a carnivorous diet, prefer softer water with temps between 78-84f with some current, are shyer than some plecos and prefer dimmer lighting, and can become territorial therefor there must be at least one cave per pleco. My question to all of you is, what size aquarium would you recommend housing them in, are they fast or slow growing, and is there any problem housing more than one male per aquarium? Any other information about them would be appreciated as well. I am very excited about receiving these plecos (I asked for them to be shipped next week due to the temperatures in my area) and want to be prepared for them. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps contribute to this thread.

my experience with them matches up with the info you have . . . I had two of them in a 90G, they didn't grow much bigger than 5" . . . I eventually traded them in at the LFS, because while they are very attractive fish, they are shy (at least, mine were) and I seldom saw them . . .

Seems to be how all plecos are,,, very shy and only come out when the light is off or turned way down. I do not even have a light on top of my Plecos tanks. Just the room light is all I keep on except for my planted tanks. So you would be better off putting your new plecos in a tank without direct light.. then you will find that they do come out during the day and can see them..I only feed them at night right before I turn out all the lights.. they love bloodworms and pellet foods.. hope this helps..

I've seen some aggressive plecos,lol
They were not shy

One another note, when you get the new plecos, I hope you post some pics of them :)

Congrats on the pick-up! L066 are one of my favourite hypans. The info you have above is pretty accurate. All hypans prefer warmer water (80+ degrees). They are carnivorous, although they enjoy the occasional zucchini or sweet potato treat. If you're looking for a fish that is active and out in the open, hypans are definitely not your fish of choice. They are shy and reclusive and do best with plenty of hiding spaces. Not a problem housing more than one male, and in fact if you aspire to breed them one day (which has been done with success with L066) I'd recommend keeping at least 2 males in a species-only comm. tank.

Good luck and do post some pics when they come in.

Thanks everyone! Pictures will definitely be posted when I receive them. Any advice on what size aquarium I should house the four in? Since they are juveniles I was going to put them in a spare 20L with a sponge filter and a powerhead for the time being, and then upgrade if needed.

Oh, and breeding will be an ultimate goal with them, but to my understanding they won't reach sexual maturity until they are around 2-3 years old?

These guys finally came today. Lucky for me the seller even threw in an extra in case of a doa but all of them made it to me just fine. So I guess I now have five instead of the original four I had ordered. Pictures will be up tomorrow.
