My L200 is one of the most active Pleco I've had. If you want a Pleco that's fairly active and doesn't mind being seen, I'd say get a Sail-Fin Pleco (Glyptoperichthys Gibbiceps).

You could say many of the commons are often out and about... but if a L24/25 is too big, a gibbiceps (and others) are definately going to be too big also.

yeh they are a bit big for me. im unwilling to accomodate a common plec at 2ft+. too large. i used to have common plecs, gibbiceps etc but 2 of them died when i moved house and i gave my 2 albino ones away because i was moving a huge distance unexpectedly and felt it was unnecessary to risk their lives when they could be safely rehomed locally.
i think i may go back to rubberlip/bulldog plecs. a few of them should have enough territory each in a 5x2x2. i know my last one left my plants alone. its not that destroying the plants is bad its destroying them too quick so my uaru go without. i get palatable plants in for my uaru to graze on.

thanks guys.

Most species of pleco if fed correctly will not eat plants, sometimes you may have a problem with them digging or uprooting (particularly if they haven't taken ahold). Rubberlips are awesome little plecos, but remember they come from upstream mountain areas and thus prefer a cooler water to thrive, which may not fit in with your cichlids.

my temp is at 26 degrees C. its always been that way even when i had the last one and it was fine till it chose to fight back against my BN plec. will do some swatting up though to refresh on them.
uprooting plants wont be a problem. i only throw them in for my uaru to graze on. i dont waste my time planting them, the uaru just move them to where they like them anyway. they dont get a chance to grow or get hold in the gravel so thats not a problem. the plants get replaced every month or so with fresh bunches.

Out of my four Plecos (Peppermint (L31), Queen Arabesque (L260), Leopard Frog (L134), Gold Nugget (L18)), the most active is the Gold Nugget.

That doesn't suprise me too much, they are all pretty reclusive. Although suprised your leopard frog isn't out more than the GN. Depending on species a decent temperature for Chaetostoma species is around 20-25 degrees, some species on the cooler end, some on the higher end.

If you are willing to get a group of 6 or more, they do become more active. I see mine all the time. There isn't a time where I can't see them in the tank.

i imagine a large group of them would look pretty good. do they shoal around like corydoras or are they just out more because there is more of their own in there?

Pleco's don't really shoal at all. They sometimes become "pairs" for periods during courtship, but not for life. If you keep many plecos of any species, you will end up seeing more of them.
