What are these fish I've had them over a year now and am still not 100%
The first was sold as Green Phantom L200 .I think not because the adipose fin dosent meet the dorsal.

A year later its developed white stripe has become more prominent on the edge of it fins.

they are in different tanks so does the enviroment affect colouration?
This is pushing it I know but what sex are they can you tell and should I get them a room?:naughty:

im pretty sure they are both L128s. Their colouration is affected firstly by where they are from. If they are from further north to south of the orinoco. both of them are more northern than southern. and yes, your conditions effect colour. light effects colour, the substrate, surroundings, and probably the water quality too. got a birdseye view shot and a belly shot of them both?

That could be akward ...I prolly have to catch em for that. They are very very rarely on the glass and they're in deep tanks.;)

They first fish, and last fish are both L200s. There are two species that are within this L#.

The two you have is the more common h. subviridis, or normal green phantom. The first that you though was an L128 is an L128, and looks to be a northern variety. As to sex, it is dependent on size. If they are smaller than 4" SL (exludes tail) then they are still too small to sex. If they are larger, then you will need so supply a side shot where the papilla is shown.

there are only 2 fish pictured wyldfya, the first 2 pics are of one fish, when jos first got it and current and then one other fish (2pics) when he first got it and current. (correct me if im wrong jos), meaning the last pic couldnt be both a L128 and a L200. and wouldnt an underneath shot be needed to sex.

Ah, I see. Then yes that would be a L128. Did you use a flash in the last picture?? That will greatly affect the color.

As to underside shot, it won't really help too much. The main shot I need is the side shot with the papilla showing, or the region where it would be.

o and about the colour change of the plecs in each year, people are hypothesising if one coloration or the other is not simply a byproduct of diet in the wild.
Also, a relation has been observed between water turbidity, darker fish in water with higher turbidity and lighter, greener fish in clearer water. It may not be a simple case of getting darker towards the north, but where the fish were found:

"Though what I've caught near La Esmeralda are definitely a brighter green, I have caught some drabbier green/mustards in Pozo Azul (in a clearwater feeder stream) and grey/blues in Pozo Cristal (in considerably slower water by the way) - may be 5 or 6 miles away (sure you remember these two localities, 20 minutes North of PAY on the way to Caicara."

just wondering wyldfya, what are you using to base that the first is L200? there is no question it is hemiancistrus sp. but...

its just that the colours of both the L200 and L128 overlap. for example his would look like http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=6876 and http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=1016

i personally wouldnt be suprised if they are both the same species.
I'm basing the type on the base color, and the under belly color. On L128 is is generally a blue to gray, on L200s it can be gray to yellow.

Thanks for the input guys(this is a right can of worms and no mistake):)

All pictures were taken with flash photography.

Both fish are around the 6" mark so fully grown I think.

I will endevor to get the pics you need for sexing but not tonight.(house invasion by the wifes friends for some cosmetic party)

So are we agreed both L128's?
