L200 Not eating.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wonder if the red algae version would help with bringing out the red colors in L24/25/114/600 etc (assuming they would eat it).
I dont know but if they eat it, It would be worth a try.
I dont know if my pleco is eating the algae sheets or not but it is disappearing. I do have other algae eating fish in the tank though.
It stays hid most of the time. I never see it unless I get in the tank to do something and it moves away.
The plan is to set up a tank just for some plecos if I can get this guy on the right track.
I still have not seen it eat anything but the algae on the glass.

I've had an L200 for 9 years. I probably got really lucky but here is some food for thought:

Which species do you have?

The Baryancistrus is mostly herbivorous. The Hemiancistrus is a true omnivore. I have a the Hemiancistrus variety. I can confirm that he indeed is a true omnivore. He started off life on zucchini and pumpkin. Then one day he stopped eating greens. The fish has lived the last 7 years (and done quite well I might add) feeding off cichlid pellets intended for my Geo Red Heads. As soon as the pellets hit the water and sink, it's game on. I didn't see the fish much for the better part of 4-5 years. Now? Forget it. He's front and center.

People brought up a few points. Your first one might not have been healthy. They're all WC fish and many come loaded with parasites. You may do well to quarantine him in a separate tank for a while. First, determine which species you have. From there, try to feed him the targeted food but dusted with a Metronidazole. If it's the Bary variety, try some algae wafers moistened then dusted with the medication at night. Hope this helps.

I will be honest with you. Im just getting into plecs. I didnt know their is different species of L200 I thought L200 was how you tell the difference between this pleco and one with a differing L number.
Are their sub species within the differing L numbers?
How do I tell the difference?

Never mind, I realized later that I knew this already. Most refer to either high fin or standard fin to tell the difference.
But I did not know they were actual feeding differences in the two so thanks for pointing that out, Big Jay.
Im not sure which I have yet, need to try and get a good look at it. Plecos..... always hiding.
