So unlike most fish that darken when stressed, royals get darker when not stressed?

In my experience, that is correct.
 
See how the stripes are black than some area are gray and faded? Your Tapajos is (unstable) the Tapajos on the bottom pic is the same way faded from stress. The base color is more black( only thing you can wish and hope for is the gold stripes are a nice gold color so the black base dnt over come the gold stripes.

hi m8 that's a lovely L27 teles pires, my next big buy for sure, have to what for one of my shops to get one in as there seasonal I here so could be next year now if one doesn't pop up on a list, again though stunning fish
 
Thanks for that tidbit, i thought my royal was stressed because his colours have been constantly dark.

Do all tapajos have that bright gold color, gotta get my hands on one of those, beautiful fish
