i was at a stone suplier looking for rocks for my fw pond and found some caled lace rock. i was woundering if this could be used in a salt water tank as a reef base looks alot like live rock at the lfs (just not live)but about 1/20th the price. i asked the people at the stone yard and they said that they dident know about use in salt water but that they mainly sell it to fish stores.

Yes and no, some people have used it with no problems while others claimed that this rock release some sort of metal into the tank and making it cloudy, i use lace rock in my reef tank and everything is fine.

You should be fine, the big issue with lace rock as myfishhadbabies said is that it can contain heavy metals that you wouldn't want in a reef tank. If this was strictly FOWLR you should be ok.

You can also closely inspect the rock for orange spots that look like rust. If you see any you can put some lemon juice on the spots and if they bubble you definately don't want to use them.

the only problem with lace (or any igneous rock) is the potential to contain heavy metals and other undesirables

so far i've used ot without hitch

the only problem would be if thise suppleier sells reatil.. i've been to places looking for rock for paving, cobbling, lining a stream bed/pond, etc and they won't sell to me cause i dont meet a minimum order size

so if heavy metals are the only posible problem i could put them in a bucket of water for a week and see if the kh or gh changes if not its fine right?

sure
but it wouldn't cause changes in the Ph etc
it'd just rust
