I am thinking of getting one of these. Can anyone attest to their ease of care vs. other big pikes? Vin Kutty suggested to ma a year or so ago that they were less water sensitive than a lot of lugubris. Anyone have experience with them-c'mon i know you're out there?
I am not sure about the care or not. I know that the Atapabo and Tapajos I seem to be more sensitive to HITH and LLE than other species.
Are you planning on getting them through Rapps? I know he just got in the Itapemirim variant. I know I am cosidering a few.
A local friend got 4 from Rich/Infinite Aquatics 3 weeks ago (good guy, great to deal with), I think Rich still has some left & also on Aquabid. High quality pikes arrived, a possible pair @ 8", the other 2 @ 6"++. The male is very aggressive - constantly after the other pikes and tankmates, even with some 'cover' (rocks, wood) in a 300 gallon tank. That male may have to go in a 'time-out' tank for a few weeks. Vin Kutty has one lone female (about 12"?) in a solitary tank - said they are possibly THE Most aggressive, least tolerant Pikes. Males tend to have more red spots, they are gorgeous fish.
i got a lacustris and i love him. mines about 11" right now and one of my favorites. i havent noticed them being any tougher to care for than any of my other pikes. i actually grew it up in a 40g with a divider and a 11" sveni on the other side due to shortages in tanks and the sveni had alittle bit of hole in the head until i moved him to a 75 gallon tank but the lacustris didnt get the hole in the head. so i dont think they are very sensitive. thats just my experience.
also he was very timid and hid in his cave all the time until i added some dithers to the tanks and since hes been much more active and asesome to watch. heres a pick of mine.
Tell us more about your fish, looks like a male... does it always have the black lateral line? Are the spots always red or sometimes more brownish, and is there sometimes less spotting visable?
he always has the black lateral line. sometimes it gets alittle more washed out and some times its a very dark black. guessing that depends on his mood. spots are always red and dont seem to ever turn brown. the caudal and anal fins have the blueish tint when you catch them at the right angle which i thinks pretty cool.
he begs for food everytime i walk by the front of the cave and i got him eating frozen krill and massivore pellets. he eats the krill out of my hand and likes to play catch with the massivore pelets before eating them. lol.
mtn with reference to the most aggressive and least tolerant of pikes. hes gotten along quite well with the new fish ive added to my tank 4 firemouths and 3 tinfoil barbs all of which were only like 3 inches when i got them and he gets along fine with all of them. the most aggresion and abuse i get is from the biggest firemouth. lol.
with respect to aggression ive noticed many of my fish seem to go through phases. my sveni and lacustris used to destroy feeders when i would put them in the tank and then i stopped feeders for a few months and when i got them again they werent at all interested. and seemed to not be ass aggressive. ive also had a mayan cichlid that used to be very scared and would go hide when i did tank maintenance and now he tries to bite me
mr pike is just a big softie. i keep him well fed during the week and i go away alot of weekend and leave them for 48 hours without feeding and they still no problems as long as no one tries to enter mr pikes cave. the last pleco that entered his cave never came out. ahhh.
Obsession, at what size did you get the Lacustris? Would really like to see a clearer pic. Does the red spotting really stand out like some pics I have seen or do the tend to wash out sometimes along with the lateral line?
Mountain, Yes that is a new Lent. I actually got two of them back in July when I PM'd you about transporting. I drove up to north of Chicago and bout Chiefmojos Lents.
got him at 3" for 25$. one of my best decisions. i saw him and i was like i might never come across another one this easily. so far im right. at work now (shhh) so no more pics but ill post some more later. tough to get clear ones cuz he gets spooked when i take the camera out. ill post some of him as a juvie also. from what i remember he didnt really have the lateral line as a juvie, just the red spots. and spot on tail.
